Game Day Terriers host the River Hawks--UPDATED

BU resumes conference play tonight as second-place Lowell visits Agganis Arena in a 7:30 p.m. start. Terriers will face the challenge of River Hawk goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who leads the nation in goals against average with 1.76. Fueling the Lowell attack are senior Joe Pendenza, sophomore Adam Chapie and senior Derek Arnold.

Last time the teams met, injuries forced BU to dress just 17 skaters and Lowell recorded a 3-1 win with an empty net goal. Tonight BU will have a full complement in front of sophomore goalie Matt O’Connor who is coming of a pair of strong performances.

The Boston Hockey Blog reports that Coach David Quinn received a call from the Hockey East Coordinator of officials regarding the questionable hitting from behind major penalty to Doyle Somerby in Monday’s Beanpot game. The official acknowledged that it was “a bad call” and should have been diving the other way. You be the judge.

Looking back 
2014 recruits Jack Eichel and Johnathon MacLeod book-ended a five goal second-period outburst by Team USA in its 8-3 thumping of Finland in the U18 Five Nations tournament in Dmitrov, Russia. Eichel, who added another goal and an assist, has five points (3G, 2A) in two tournament games, and 51 points (25G, 26A) in 31 U18 games. Blueliner MacLeod’s goal was his second of the season. Team USA takes on Sweden today.

A few thousand miles away in Sweden, the U17s take on the Czech Republic today in its second Five Nation Tournament game. Hockey’s Future talked with 2015 recruit Jordan Greenway, who posted two assists in the opening game win against Finland. The 6-4 left wing traced his hockey path from Potsdam in Upstate New York, to Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota and to the NTDP program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This season, he has 28 points (11G, 17A) in 37 games.

Olympics

NCAA.com’s Mark Bedics points out that BU is second on the list of college programs with the most Olympic hockey players with 32, including the four who played key roles in the 1980 Miracle on Ice team, captain Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O’Callahan and David Silk. 27 of the 32 played for Team USA with Kevin Shattenkirk on the this year’s squad being the most recent. The other five? Recently retired from the NHL, Adrian Aucoin played for Canada in 1994, Grant Goegan skated for Italy in 1984, Olivier Prechac played for host France in 1968 and Dick Decloe was a forward for The Netherlands in 1980. Herb Wakabayashi (photo), a two-time All-American in the late 1960s and playmaker for BU’s vaunted “Pinball Line,” represented Japan three times: 1972, 1976 and 1980. The only other three-time Olympian from BU is Scott Young.

Looking back

Former teammates Kevin Shattenkirk and David Warsofsky were on opposing sides in the Blues’ 3-2 OT win over the Bruins. Prior to the contest, Shattenkirk guested on KMOX Radio’s “Sports Hub” to talk about the Blues, playing in the Beanpot as a Terrier and his Olympic hopes.
