It was an all-too-familiar scenario in the Terriers’
difficult season. A short-handed goal yielded. Too many turnovers. Uneven shot
totals. A goalie standing tall to keep the team in the game. And an
empty-netter to seal the decision.
Terriers fell to New Hampshire, 3-1, in a Monday matinee,
three days after the Wildcats won the first half of the home-and-home, 4-3. Brendan Collier’s first collegiate goal at
the 7:40 mark of the first, assisted by Mike Moran gave BU a 1-0 lead but midway
through the period, UNH’s Matt Willow, who had scored twice on Friday, scored
an even-strength goal. Halfway through the second period, BU went on the power
play for the first time, but an errant pass sent Willows behind the BU defense and
he beat Sean Maguire high to the glove side. BU’s attempts to knot the score
were stymied by UNH’s Casey DeSmith.
A Doyle Somerby slash on Willows during a third-period breakaway
led to a penalty shot, but he was stoned by Maguire. When the Terriers pulled
their goalie, Willows completed his hat trick finding the empty net from the
blue line.
Maguire turned aside 35 Wildcat shots in another strong
performance.
