Terriers rally past Michigan, 3-2 UPDATED

Third-period goals by freshman Jack Eichel and junior Matt Lane, backed by a 38-save performance by junior netminder Matt O’Connor, powered the Terriers to a come-from-behind 3-2 win against Michigan at a sold-out Agganis Arena. The win, coupled with Friday night’s 1-0 shutout of Michigan State gave BU a sweep of its Big 10-Hockey East Challenge games.

The Wolverines, coming off an 8-4 win over Lowell, got on the board first when freshman Zach Werenski blasted home a shot from the top of the right circle on the game’s first power play. Terriers knotted the score just 34 seconds into the middle period when junior Ahti Oksanen converted Danny O'Regan’s pass from just outside the crease. 

Michigan regained the lead at the 8:33 mark when Alex Kile’s power play backhander eluded O’Connor. Early in the third, BU got the equalizer when Doyle Somerby’s shot was deflected off the shaft of Eichel’s stick.

With 3:10 left in regulation, freshman Brandon Hickey’s slapper was tipped home by Lane (photo)  for BU’s first and only lead of the game. The Wolverines pulled the goalie for an extra attacker but the Terriers kept Michigan from any grade A chances.

Lane’s game-winner earned him first-star honors, while O’Connor, who yielded only two goals in his first two starts, was the second star.

All three BU goals were subjected to video review, which confirmed they were “good” goals. A score by the Wolverines was waived off due to goalie interference.

Somerby, whose assist on Eichel's goal was his first point of the season, received high marks from Coach David Quinn for his improved physical play. Quinn also noted that BU needs to work on its penalty-killing and on face offs as Michigan dominated the face-off circle, 39-23.

Looking ahead

2015 recruit Bobo Carpenter scored two even strength goals, including the game-winner in Sioux City’s 5-3 win over Lincoln.  Carpenter, who scored three times this weekend, now has a team-best six goals and is tied for second in USHL overall scoring with 11 points in 10 games and a +8.

2015 recruit Jacob Forsbacka-Karlsson assisted on two goals as Omaha doubled up Des Moines, 4-2.  The playmaking center from Sweden leads the Lancers in assists with five.

2016 recruit Kiefer Bellows scored his third goal of the season for Sioux Falls in the Stampede’s 4-2 loss to Cedar Rapids. A first round pick in the 2014 USHL futures draft, Bellows helped Edina High School win the Minnesota state title last season.

At the Beantown Fall Classic, 2016 recruit Patrick Harper scored twice and added an assist for Neponset Valley as the River Rats U18s powered past the Little Bruins, 7-4. In the tournament quarterfinals, Harper scored a goal in Neponsets’ 2-0 blanking of Detroit Belle Tire.

 
Women’s Team

Terriers dropped the second half of their two-game series in Maine, losing a 4-2 decision to the Black Bears. BU took a 1-0 lead early in the first on Rebecca Russo’s second goal of the season. Maine evened the score on a second-period power play. Despite a clear advantage on shots (43 to 30), the Terriers were unable to solve Black Bears goalie Meaghann Treacy.

Maine struck twice in a minute midway through the third and then added an empty-netter before BU got a late goal from Sarah Bayersdorfer, her first of the year.
