Third period surge carries BU past Michigan--UPDATED

After being kept off the scoresheet on Friday, the #4 Terriers used a trio of third-period goals to double up Michigan, 4-2. Sophomore Jordan Greenway, who scored the game-winner, added two assists for a three-point night, which was matched by sophomore Charlie McAvoy and freshman Patrick Harper.  The win was the first-ever for the Terriers at Yost Arena.

Terrier coach David Quinn juggled his forward lines, moving Bobo Carpenter back to center and inserting defensemen Shane Switzer and Brien Diffley on the third and fourth lines respectively.

The Wolverines took an early lead on Brendan Warren’s goal as the home team had a 14-6 first-period edge on shots.  BU broke its weekend scoring drought with a power play goal five minutes into the middle period when Harper’s pass enabled freshman Dante Fabbro to walk in from the point to the right face off dot and rip a shot on the short side past Jack LaFontaine, who was screened by Greenway.

Terriers continued their momentum in the third period when blueliner McAvoy sneaked in and converted Greenway’s centering pass at the nine minute mark. The 2-1 lead lasted just a minute-and-a-half as Dexter Dancs got around the BU defense and beat Jake Oettinger with a sharp-angle shot. BU responded just two minutes later, when sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson raced down the right side and fired a shot on goal that LaFontaine stopped, but Greenway rapped home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season—matching his output from last season.

BU, which held an 18-8 edge in shots in the third period, expanded the lead to 4-2, when  Harper deflected home Carpenter’s slapshot, with Greenway also assisting.

Oettinger turned aside 25 Wolverine shots including a late Michigan breakaway. BU had 34 shots and scored on one of four power plays, while killing Michigan’s only two power plays.  The Terriers had a season-low three penalties, ironically drawn by the game’s three offensive stars, Greenway, Harper and McAvoy.

Harper has points in eight of BU’s nine games and leads the team in scoring with 14 points (5G, 9A), while Greenway has 12 (5G, 7A). Harper is tied for fifth nationally in points per game with 1.56.
