Looking Back to the 1971-72 Championship Season: BU vs. UNH
Dec. 4: On this date BU played its second game in the brand new Walter Brown Arena before a crowd of 3,082. For the second game in a row, senior power forward Bob Gryp delivered the game-winner as the Terriers edged New Hampshire, 2-1, improving their record to 3-0-0.
BU fired 50 shots on the Wildcats’ goalie, Bob Smith, but could only find the net twice, despite eight power-play opportunities. Paul "Sweeper" Giandomenico’s 15-foot backhander into the upper left corner of the net gave BU a 1-0 lead after one. Steve Dolloff and Don “Toot” Cahoon (photo) assisted.
Following a scoreless second period, UNH tied the score in the third when Bill Munroe’s 25-footer was initially stopped by Tim Regan, but the puck trickled through.
With less than nine minutes left, Captain Jake Danby and Guy Burrowes fired shots that Smith defended but couldn’t corral. Gryp went hard to the net, collected the rebound and banked the puck in off Smith to make it 2-1, BU.
Next up: a match-up with ECAC rival Harvard, one of only two teams to beat BU during its 28-2-1 national championship season in 1970-71.
Women’s Team
Terrier women will also aim for a sweep, after Friday night’s overtime win at Merrimack. Game time today at Walter Brown Arena is 3 p.m. Live stream is on College Sports Live. Audio available from the Terrier Sports Radio Network.
