Quinn to interview for Bruins job; hip surgery for O'Brien; Gallagher & Hutson to attend Jr. National Team evaluation camp UPDATED

Former Terriers and N.Y. Rangers head coach David Quinn is expected to interview for the open Bruins’ head coaching spot this week. Last Friday, The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa reported that Quinn and Kraken assistant Jay Leach are the leading candidates to replace Bruce Cassidy.

In three seasons behind the Rangers' bench, Quinn had a 96-87-25 record with one playoff appearance. Also due to be interviewed is current Bruins’ assistant coach Joe Sacco, who was Colorado’s head coach for four seasons beginning in 2009. Others reported to be in the mix for the position include Providence head coach Nate Leaman and former Univ. of Denver and Dallas Stars coach Jim Montgomery.

Both Quinn and Sacco had their Terrier playing careers overlap with that of veteran Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.

Journalist Mark Divver reports that rising senior center Jay O’Brien recently underwent hip surgery and is expected to be  ready for the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

Rising sophomore Ty Gallagher (photo) and freshman Lane Hutson are among the 60 invitees to the USA Hockey Junior National Team evaluation camp next month in Plymouth Michigan. Gallagher, who had 16 points in 34 games, taking a regular spot on the BU blue-line from the get-go. Voted to Hockey East’s All-Rookie team, he led all rookies with 44 blocked shots, was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week twice and Defender of the Week twice.

Not on the roster is junior goalie Drew Commesso, who was the #1 goalie for the US Junior National Team a year ago when the World Junior Championships were cancelled after one page. Commesso later was rostered for both the U.S. Olympic team for the Beijing Games in February and for Team USA in the IIHF Men's World Championships in May. Online reporting suggests that Commesso declined an invitation to the evaluation camp to focus on the upcoming Terrier season.

Looking ahead

The NHL has announced that incoming freshman defenseman Lane Hutson has received the EJ McGuire Award of Excellence from USA Hockey. The award, given annually, is presented to the NHL Draft-eligible player who "best exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism."

NTDP associate coach Nick Fohr said, “"On the ice, [Hutson] makes his teammates better. He finds ways to get them pucks when most players typically can't. In the locker room, he's a little quieter. But the guys listen to him because he's gained so much respect for his work ethic on the ice."

The Daily Faceoff’s Chris Peters tweeted:

Well deserved. Hutson is as competitive as they come. He's been one of my favorites of this class for a long time. Been told a lot about what he won't be or can't be because of his size and yet every time you watch him, he's making plays at both ends of the ice. Every single game.

Power forward Kaplan will join his North Jersey Avalanche 16U AAA linemates Jeremy Wilmer and Quinn Hutson in the Terrier’s freshman class.  Kaplan has 38 points (13 G, 25A) last season, including 18 points in 22 USHL games and six points in six games at the IIHF World U18s.
