Terriers double up UNH behind Fensore, Lane Hutson

#9/7 Terriers shook off a middle period of "self-inflicted mistakes" that left them tied with UNH and scored three goals in the final period for a 6-3. Captain Dom Fensore scored the game-winner and added an empty net goal, while Lane Hutson had a trio of assists. Vinnie Duplessis, filling in for Drew Commesso, who is fighting an illness, stopped 26 shots, including all 11 he faced in the final period.

BU jumped to an early lead when Devin Kaplan’s hard wrister from the left circle, with Luke Tuch setting a screen, hit iron twice and appeared to stay out. The goal light didn’t go on, despite Jay O’Brien celebrating the tally. It wasn’t until a stoppage three minutes later that a review of the play confirmed the puck had crossed the goal line. Both Tuch and O’Brien were credited with assists.

Midway through the period, BU’s fourth line doubled the lead. A perfect headman pass by Jamie Armstrong sent Sam Stevens and Dylan Peterson away on a 2-on-1. They traded passes until Stevens buried a shot into the half-open net for his fourth goal.

The Wildcats began the middle period on a power play carried over from the first period and quickly capitalized. After a Terrier clearing attempt failed to leave the zone, the puck went Cy LeClerc in the left circle. His shot went under a diving Case McCarthy and past Duplessis.

Four minutes later with the Terriers on a power play, Morgan Winters got behind the BU defense and scored short-handed, beating Duplessis to the stick side and  bringing the Wildcats even at 2-2. A spearing call—and a game misconduct—on Wildcat goalie David Fessenden sent him to the showers and gave BU a five-minute power play. At 7:35, a Lane Hutson pass sent Ryan Greene into the offensive zone. He cut to the middle and slid the puck to Quinn Hutson who snapped the puck past Tyler Muszelik for his fourth goal and a 3-2 lead.

UNH pulled even again late in the period on a power play. After O’Brien nearly scored short-handed, LeClerc, unmarked in the right circle, fired his second tally of the game.

The Wildcats had the shots edge early in the third before the Terriers took control. Midway through the period, O’Brien won an offensive zone draw, which Kaplan pushed back to Ty Gallagher. He passed along the blueline to Fensore who dashed down the left side and fired a sharp-angle shot that glanced off Muszelik and into the net. It was nearly identical to the captain’s goal against Notre Dame. Fensore has goals in three consecutive games.

Following a strong save by Duplessis on a Wildcat attempt at the goalmouth, BU extended the lead, scoring on the rush. Lane Hutson skated into the offensive zone, made a shift to create a lane for a pass to brother Quinn in the right circle. Quinn found Ethan Phillips alone on the doorstep for a redirect into the net.

UNH pulled Muszelik with about four minutes left but their attempts to cut into lead were blunted by BU. One more Terrier power play resulted in Fensore’s second goal of the game---and fourth in the last three games—on a shot from the right point. Lane Hutson and Greene had the helpers.

Fensore now has five goals equaling his career high, set last season.

With seven points (3G,4A) in his last three games, Lane Hutson leads all NCAA defensemen with 17 points. He and Matt Brown are tied for fourth in overall scoring among Hockey East skaters.

Fensore, Greene, Quinn Hutson and Kaplan each had two points.

The victory was BU’s 11th consecutive win against New Hampshire.

With the win, BU is now #6 in Pairwise and #5 in the CHN Power Rankings, based on KRACH.
