UPDATED: P-O-W honors for Quinn Hutson; Inside BU Hockey; Poll Story; SNL; Women's Beanpot Game Day

Junior assistant captain Quinn Hutson’s 3-goal, 2-assist performance in the sweep of Vermont has brought him Hockey East Player of the Week honors. After scoring twice in Friday’s 6-1 win, the oldest of the Hutson brothers had a goal and two helper Saturday as BU’s second line—Hutson-Jack Hughes-Cole Eiserman—exploded for five goals and five assists.

Hutson has been on a serious “heater” beginning with the 4-2 win over UMass (G,A) on Dec. 11. Since then: 2G,A vs. Yale, 2G in first UVM game and G,2A in the second.

With a 10-13-23 scoring line, Hutson is tied for sixth in the conference in both goals and points. He's on pace to surpass his career bests in goals (18) and points (36), achieved last season.

A trio of Terriers were named to Hockey East's top performers of the week:

Cole Eiserman, BU (Fr., F; Newburyport, Mass.) Posted a career-high four points thanks to his first collegiate hat trick on Saturday against Vermont. Eiserman notched the eventual game-winner and finished the weekend as a plus-three.  

Cole Hutson, BU (Fr., D; North Barrington, Ill.) Totaled three assists on the weekend, was a plus-four and led BU with four blocked shots in a sweep of Vermont. Two of Hutson’s assists came in Saturday’s win, which ex tended his point streak to three games (2g, 5a).  

Mathieu Caron, BU (Sr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) Made 53 saves and helped BU go 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in this past weekend’s sweep of Vermont. On Friday, he made 27 saves, including two breakaway stops, in a 6-1 triumph.

The Terriers’ sweep of Vermont propelled them up four slots in the USCHO Men’s Hockey Poll, from #15 to #11. They’re one of seven Hockey East teams in the top 20: #2 BC, #5 Maine, #6 Providence, #9 UMass Lowell, #11 BU, #17 UConn and #19 New Hampshire. All three top-ranked teams failed to sweep their series. Michigan State tied Penn State and lost in a shootout; BC split with Merrimack and Minnesota split with Ohio State.

BU also landed at #11--up two spots--in the USA Hockey/The Rink Inside Division 1 Poll. The same seven Hockey East schools are in the top 20, but here Providence is #4, Maine is tied for #6 and UNH is #18. 

BU moves up to #9 in John Buccigross’ ranking, while Everything College Hockey has BU at #14. In the Pairwise Rankings, the Terriers began the weekend at #13 and finished at #8.

►The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler’s ranking of Edmonton Oiler prospects has Shane Lachance at #6 and Matt Copponi at #13.

Lachance: "He’s a physically daunting player with a good feel around the net, a willingness to go plant himself there, and a knack for getting his stick on tips, redirects and rebounds. He’s showing more comfort on the puck and confidence on the attack as he tries to diversify his game beyond the stereotypical wall/net-front guy. Lachance works hard, he supports play well, he plays off skill guys effectively, he’s good along the wall on the cycle, and there are some who believe he might become a classic big-man role player at the next level."

Copponi: “He’s a competitive, hardworking, lead-by-example player who has shown up in big moments and been consistently impactful at ages 19-21 in college. I like the way he gets after it, he has gotten stronger, he reads and reacts quickly out there and he plays off his linemates well. He has some talent and he’s just a gamer."

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)  

Prior to Cole Eiserman’s, the last freshman to record a hat trick for the Terriers was Chris Higgins on March 24th, 2006 in a 9-2 win against Nebraska-Omaha in the NCAA Regionals.  H/T to BU Hockey Stats

Eiserman, the national freshman leader in goals (12), is second among rookies in points in Hockey East and third nationally. His .67 gpg is best among D1 freshmen. Cole Hutson (4-13-17) is fourth in Hockey East and sixth nationally.

Jack Hughes’ three-point game Saturday was his second as a Terrier. He had two goals and an assist in a win vs. UNH last season. Coach Jay Pandolfo called it one of his best games for BU. Following the game, Hughes told the media:  

“We can’t be satisfied with two wins in a row. I think we have done it all year — we’ve had a big win here or there, and then the next weekend didn’t follow it up. We’ll enjoy it, but we got to get back to work and fix a couple things to keep trying to get better, because we’re not where we want to be right now. We hope we’ll get there by April.”

The last BU hat trick against Vermont was by Quinn Hutson in last year’s regular-season finale at Agganis Arena. Quinn has six goals in BU's last three games against UVM. 

Let's take one more look at the "ridiculous" backhand goal from Jack Harvey, which not only was the SportsCenter #2 on the Top 10 but also became an Instagram sensation. Gotta be the front-runner for Hockey East's Goals of the Week.

Looking ahead

2025 recruit Jack Murtagh scored a goal and assisted on two others in the NTDP U18s’ 6-3 win over Tri-City. Despite missing nine games due to injury, the 6’1” left-shot is second on the U18s with 28 points (12G,16A) in 27 games. Fellow recruit Charlie Trethewey scored his fifth goal. The right-shot defenseman has a 5-8-13 line. 

Murtagh,Trethewey and Conrad Fondrk will play in the Chipotle All-American Prospects Game this Thursday in Plymouth, Mich. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with live coverage on NHL Network.

2026 recruit Rian Chudzinski scored a goal and assisted on three others in Dexter Southfield’s 5-0 win against Brunswick. Chudzinski, a right-shot center from Needham, has a team-best 17 points (5G,12A) in 12 games. Coach Dan Donato’s squad swept two from previous #1 Brunswick and moved into the top spot on the NEHJ Prep rankings.

#14/13 Terriers will face off against Harvard in the opening round of the 46th Women's Beanpot at Matthews Arena. Puck drop is at 4:30 p.m. with several live stream options. See below. 

BU last won the Beanpot in 2019. Last season, the Terriers reached the finals but lost to Northeastern in overtime.
