Give the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL credit for marketing timeliness and creativity. With the travails of Illinois’ now-ex-Governor all over the news, the Wranglers staged Governor Rod Blagojevich Prison Uniform Night, this past Saturday. For the special promotional event, the Wranglers wore old-time prison uniform jerseys with horizontal black and white stripes (video) while their opponents, the Bakersfield Condors, wore orange jumpsuit-style jerseys. And the refs’ jerseys mimicked prison guard attire. Prison bars adorned the penalty box and the goal judges wore old-style judicial wigs.
Where a prison number would be, the Wranglers' jerseys had an “ILLGOV” patch with the player’s uniform number. The Condors' jerseys had a similar patch that read “DOC” [Dept. of Corrections] with the player’s uniform number.
Two former Terrier blueliners participated in the tongue-in-check fun. Dan Spang (video- 2nd interview) plays for Las Vegas, while Tom Morrow is on the Condors. Spang assisted on the first two Wrangler goals in a 5-1 win.
The Montreal Canadians also wore horizontal stripes, but of the barber-pole variety, on Sunday against the Bruins, showing off retro uniforms from the 1912-13 season.
