Greenway, Phelps lead BU past UMass

Freshman Jordan Greenway scored the game’s first and last goals and sophomore Chase Phelps had a goal and an assist as the Terriers doubled up Massachusetts, 6-3 at the Mullins Center.  BU scored three early goals and later extended to a 5-1 lead before the Minutemen scored two third-period goals.

Hardworking Greenway put BU on the board just 57 seconds into the game, banging home the rebound of a Brandon Hickey shot. Less than two minutes later, Phelps finished off passes from junior Tommy Kelley and captain Matt Grzelcyk with a wrap-around goal. That early assault prompted UMass Coach John Micheletto to replace goalie Henry Dill with Nic Renyard, but the move didn’t slow down the Terriers as senior Mike Moran, assisted by Phelps, scored on a sharp-angle shot.

UMass cut the lead to 3-1 when Ray Pigozzi found a loose puck in the crease for a power play goal—one that Coach David Quinn felt should have been disallowed because the whistle had blown. Terriers matched that one in the final minute of the first period when senior assistant captain Danny O’Regan found freshman Oskar Andrén (photo) in the slot for a quick wrister that was the Stockholm native’s first collegiate goal as well as the game-winner.

O’Regan scored the second period’s only goal deflecting freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson’s shot past Renyard. In the third period, the Minutemen scored twice in a one-minute span. The first was a power play goal by Dominic Trento, whose sharp-angle shot seemed to surprise senior goalie Sean Maguire; the second was scored by Joseph Widmar on a goal-mouth scramble. Greenway closed the scoring, stuffing the puck home following a UMass turnover.

First-star honors went to O’Regan, who has a team-leading 32 points. Greenway was the second star and Phelps was the third.

BU’s faceoff dominance, winning 41 of 63, was a key factor in the puck possession advantage BU enjoyed throughout most of the game.

2019 recruit Joel Farabee (photo) scored his 12^th goal in the Selects Academy’s 3-1 loss to the Connecticut Rangers in USPHL 16U action. The Cicero, N.Y., native has a team-leading 37 points in 20 games.
