Terriers edge Lowell in overtime on Greenway goal--UPDATED

Freshman Jordan Greenway deflected home a Matt Grzelcyk wrist shot for a power play goal, giving #7 Terriers a 2-1 overtime win against #11 Lowell at Agganis Arena. With the win, BU inches closer to earning a first-round bye in the Hockey East playoffs. 

BU trails third-place Providence by two points and fourth-place Lowell by one and has two games in hand vs. Lowell. The teams meet again at Tsongas Arena in Lowell at 7 p.m.

The tight-checking game became a battle of hot goaltenders with BU’s Sean Maguire and Lowell’s Kevin Boyle turning aside every scoring chance until late in the second period. Freshman Charlie McAvoy’s headman pass sprung Mike Moran, who broke in on Boyle and beat him through the five hole. It was the senior’s second goal in a week.

The narrow lead held until midway through the final period when a mix-up between Maguire and sophomore defenseman John MacLeod allowed Lowell’s Ryan Dmowski to grab a loose put behind the BU goal. Maguire made the initial save, but AJ White flipped the rebound past the sprawled goalie to knot the score at 1-1.

After both teams had some grade A chances during the final minutes of regulation, Dmowski drew an offensive-zone boarding penalty with half a minute left. BU didn’t connect in the final seconds of the period, but once overtime began, the Terriers quickly set up in the River Hawks’ zone.  Senior Ahti Oksanen slid the puck to Grzelcyk, who sent a wrist shot toward the goal. Greenway, perfectly positioned outside the crease, redirected the puck past Boyle for his fifth goal of the season and his first game-winner as a Terrier.

The 6-5 forward, who earned first-star honors, has 16 points (5G, 11A) in the last 16 games, beginning with his game-tying goal against Cornell in Red Hot Hockey 5.

Minnesota Wild prospect Jordan Greenway was even thru 13 GP. Scored OT GWG tonight for 2-1 BU W and is +16 last 16. Phys. force all 3 zones.

Maguire turned aside 25 shots to gain his 10^th victory of the season.

Head Coach David Quinn remarked:

“It’s playoff hockey from here on in, and that certainly had a playoff feel to it. Every inch was contested for … a low-scoring game … I thought we had had some great chances we weren’t able to capitalize on, and they did, too."

►The victory was BU’s 11^th on home ice this season, one more than a year ago.

Looking ahead

2016 recruit Kieffer Bellows scored a pair of goals for the NTDP 18s, but Team USA fell to Sweden in a shootout at the Five Nations tournament in Helsinki. 2016 recruit Clayton Keller assisted on Bellows’ first goal and scored the lone US goal in the shootout, while Jake Oettinger made 23 saves.  Bellows has a team-leading 35 goals along with 22 assists.

Women’s Team

Terriers begin a home-and-home series with New Hampshire today at Walter Brown Arena with puck drop set for 3 p.m. The teams last met in November with BU scoring three times in the third period for a 5-3 win in Durham.
