Thayer Academy forward Ty Amonte (photo, #12) has committed to BU and
will join the 2017 recruit class. The 5-11, 185 lb., right-shot center is the son of
former Terrier standout, NHL star and US Olympian Tony Amonte, who is Thayer’s
head coach. Now a senior, Amonte is
expected to spend next season in the USHL with Youngtown, for whom he suited up
twice this season. He also made two starts for the NTDP U18s.
Amonte is the third son of a former Terrier currently in
BU’s recruiting pipeline, joining 2016 recruit Chad Krys (former BU captain
Mark Krys) and fellow 2017 recruit Brady Tkachuk (Keith Tkachuk).

In 20 prep games this season, he has a 12-30-42 scoring
line, putting him among the top scorers in New England prep hockey. Last
season, he had 40 points in 30 games for the Tigers.
This past fall, he scored 12 points in 14 games for the
Cape Cod Whalers and set up the game-winning goal in the Massachusetts Midget
U18 Championship game. The Whalers will
play in Nationals this spring in San Jose.
A growth spurt in the last year coincided with Amonte’s improved
on-ice skills. Following last June’s Teal Invite Tournament, USHR wrote:

After the Midget U18 title game last November, SB Nation's Jeff Cox
tweeted: “the improvement from Ty Amonte is remarkable. He's a whole diff
player, was terrific in all 3 zones, w, w/o puck.”
More recently, USHR noted that Amonte "competes hard and is
a two-way guy who has a good shot, and can make plays. His skating is good but
lacks explosiveness."
Amonte, who joins a 2017 recruit class that includes forwards
Patrick Harper, Hank Crone and Tkachuk and defenseman David Farrance, was one of eight Massachusetts high school players to make the NHL Central Scouting Players-to-Watch list last fall, earning a C rating.

Looking ahead
2018 recruit Tyler Weiss assisted on two goals in the Don
Mills Flyers’ come-from-behind 3-3 tie with the Junior Canadians in the GTHL
playoffs. Weiss, along with 2018 fellow recruits Jake Wise of Central Catholic HS and Jack DeBoer of Salisbury School have
left for Norway to skate for Team USA in the Youth Olympic Games,
which begin on Feb. 13.
Looking back
Joe Folino, a member of BU’s first two Frozen Four
teams, has passed away. Folino was a teammate of Jack Kelley, Jack Garrity, Ed
Cahoon, Walter Anderson and Ike Bevins on the squad that reached the 1950
championship game and the 1951 consolation game.
Former BU assistant captain Sean Escobedo has been signed
to a PTO contract by the AHL Charlotte Checkers, a Carolina Hurricanes
affiliate. The Bayside, N.Y., native was
in his second season with the ECHL Greenville Swamp Rats and had 16 points in
64 games.
