Terriers "celebrate" another top '06 recruit; Bobo re-ups

BU’s recruitment of top 2006 birthdate prospects continued today as highly regarded forward Macklin Celebrini posted his commitment on Instagram today. 

The 5’11” left-shot, whose older brother, defenseman Aiden Celebrini verballed to BU last month, was, according to journalist Mark Divver, “electric for St. Shattuck St. Mary’s last season,” leading the team with 117 points and scoring 50 goals in 52 games despite being one of the youngest players on Shattuck’s 18U Prep squad. He turned 16 this past June.

The previous season, playing for Shattuck’s 14U squad, he had a 51-90-141 scoring line in 50 games. That Spring, the Seattle Thunderbirds made him first overall pick in the 2021 WHL US Import Draft.

Natives of Vancouver, B.C., the Celebrini brothers moved to the Bay Area when their father joined the Golden State Warriors’ medical staff. Macklin played for the San Jose Jr. Sharks 14U in 2019-20, leading the team in goals (49) and points (94). Earlier in his career, he participated in the World Selects Invitational as a 12- and 13-year-old.

Celebrini had eye-popping numbers with Shattuck’s 18U team last season. In 52 games he scored 50 goals and added 67 assists for 117 points. That came on the heels of a monster season in 2020-21 on the 14U team where he totaled 141 points (51g, 90a) in 50 games. He’s going to suit up for the Chicago Steel in the USHL next season.

NZ Scouts: “Macklin has clean handles and quick hands, tremendous speed and patience with the puck. He made the game look easy at times and dominated the competition at moments.  He gets his head up quickly and can make the pass to feed the back door. He can handle the puck at full speed and this seemed to be the strongest aspect of his game: using his superior speed to blow by opponents.”

Macklin has been tendered by the Chicago Steel and will play for the perennial USHL powerhouse next season, along with 2023 Terrier recruit Jack Harvey. Aiden, who played with his brother at Shattuck last year, will suit up for USHL Lincoln, along with another 2023 recruit, Doug Grimes.

Celebrini is a highly-skilled forward with elite hockey sense, electric skating ability and a high-end release on his shot. He posted 117 points in 52 games while playing for Shattuck’s top U18 team as a 15-year-old. There is only one player in the illustrious history of Shattuck St. Mary’s that produced at a higher rate for the prep team as a U16 player – perhaps Shattuck’s most famous alumnus, Sidney Crosby. 

For Boston University, this is a major recruiting coup for new head coach Jay Pandolfo, who replaced Albie O’Connell in the spring. Landing the top recruit in the 2006 birth year is a statement addition for the Terriers.

It is believed that Celebrini, who turned 16 in June is going to work towards an accelerated high school degree in order to join BU as early as the 2023-24 season, which would put him in the NCAA ranks for his draft-eligible season.

On Monday, BU had received commitments from three other top ’06 prospects: center Kamil Bednarik and defensemen Cole Hutson and Owen Keefe.  Bednarik and Hutson are rostered for the NTDP U17s. Keefe was tendered by USHL Muskegon and will join another future Terrier blueliner, Gavin McCarthy. 

 

McCarthy is currently playing with the US Under 18 Select  team in the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament in Red Deer, Alberta.  From a few games I’ve seen, the 6’1” right-shot plays a strong two-way game, similar in style to older brother Case McCarthy.

Looking back

Former Terrier captain Bobo Carpenter has re-signed with the ECHL Florida Everblades. Last season he had 18 points (9G,9A) in 18 games, helping Florida claim the league’s Kelly Cup championship.
