Q. As captain in a year of coaching staff transition, what are the leadership goals for you and your assistants?
A. I think for us, we want to set an example every day when we come into the rink. Working hard, competing, and being there for each other. That's a big thing that our leadership group wanted to implement this year and we feel that this team has what it takes to make that step.
Q. You’re coming off a breakout season, leading the team in scoring, second in the conference among defensemen for points and tied for first in assists. What factors powered all that success?
A. For me it was just being more comfortable. Another year older and more experience. I was given a great opportunity and I think in the off-season I really emphasized being a more shot threat player, which can open up lanes and more scoring opportunities.
Q. What facets of your game are you looking to improve upon?
A. Some things that I wanted to work on were my shot and my defensive game. Just having good gaps and good stick positioning can go a long way, so just watching a lot of film to see the things I can improve on is a big thing for me. Also, just continuing to get bigger and stronger in the weight room was another thing for me.
Q. How has participating in Carolina Hurricane development camps contributed to the growth of your game?
A. It was an amazing experience. We got to talk to a lot of great people about a lot of things. We discussed the mental side of the sport and how to be well prepared. We also had a nutritional meeting and actually got to cook some food, which was pretty fun. Overall, it was a great experience in Raleigh!

►USCHO Fan Forum poster Hydrant offered an explanation of NeutralZone’s recruit class rankings:
Neutralzone has BU at 9th in this year’s recruiting class, but that is because we only have 6 incoming freshman, second lowest is 8 freshmen of the teams higher. We have the highest "star average" of recruits as NZ has BU's average star rating at 4.21/5 (second highest is Minnesota at 4.14/5). NZ uses the star average and number of recruits to get the ranking. For instance, in 2019 BU had 13 freshmen, the most of any school, and were ranked the #1 recruiting class. Even though they weren't all top quality, it still came above other programs since BU had more incoming freshmen.
Other HE programs rankings:
- BC at 4 (9 recruits, 4.08/5 star average)
- UConn at 5 (12 recruits, 3.79/5 star average)
- UMass at 6 (8 recruits, 4.3/5 star average)
- NU at 8 (10 recruits, 3.8/5 average)
Looking ahead
The NTDP U18s begin their season this weekend with a pair of games against Muskegon with five future Terriers between the two squads. Forward Ryan Fine, defenseman Kai Janviriya and goalie Michael Chambre are in their second NTDP seasons. For the Lumberjacks, defenseman Gavin McCarthy returns while recent commit Owen Keefe, also a blueliner, is in his first USHL season.
Looking back
26 years ago yesterday, Team USA won the third and deciding game of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, defeating Canada, 5-2. Tony Amonte produced the game-winner with less than three minutes left in the third period, followed by two empty-netters. Along with Amonte, the U.S. roster featured Shawn McEachern, Keith Tkachuk and Scott Young. Jack Ferreira served as assistant GM.
Alex Chiasson has been signed to a professional tryout (PTO) contract by the Arizona Coyotes. He scored 13 goals and added nine assists for Vancouver last season, after earning a roster spot also on a PTO. A 2009 Dallas draft pick, he previously played three season in Edmonton and won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018
