Game Day: BU hosts NTDP U18s; Physical defenseman commits for 2023

#11 Terriers take on the NTDP U18s today at Agganis Arena. Puck drop is at 2 p.m. for the contest that will be live-streamed on ESPN+

The last two meetings between BU and the U18s were both 4-3 decisions. In Jan. 2020, BU won in a shootout on goals by Wilmer Skoog and Kasper Kotkansalo. A year ago, the U18s won on an unassisted goal by Quinn Hutson, who had been added to the US roster for that weekend. Current Terriers Lane Hutson and Devin Kaplan played for the U18s in that game.

Other NTDP alums on the BU roster: Drew Commesso, Dom Fensore, Case McCarthy, Ty Gallagher, Cade Webber, Jay O'Brien, Luke Tuch and Jeremy Wilmer.

The U18s sport an impressive 18-3-0 record, including wins against Michigan State, Lake Superior St., Notre Dame, Army, RIT Rensselaer and Michigan Tech. They have an explosive offense featuring a number of projected first round draft picks.  Earlier in the week, the U18s defeated Youngstown, 4-1.


Two Terrier recruits are on the U18 roster. Kai Janviriya (photo) is a smaller, but dynamic defenseman with seven points in 20 games. Goalie Michael Chambre has made two starts and one relief appearance for the U18s and has a 3.19 GAA.

The Friends of BU Hockey Holiday Skate will take place following the game. Fan are invited to skate with the Terriers. ►Hockey journalist Chris Peters offers his projection for Team USA’s roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships in Cornwall, Ontario. USA Hockey will announce the roster on Dec. 5. Peters lists Lane Hutson as a lock to join the defense corps while he has former Terrier Tyler Boucher as likely to earn a spot at forward.

Following Wednesday's 5-2 win against Notre Dame, Commesso spoke with BU's Laura Stickels.  The Chicago Blackhawks draft pick now has a 4-1-0 record in five home starts, and a .948 save percentage in those games.

Looking ahead

Youth Hockey Hub has tweeted that BU received a commitment from defenseman Hunter Hady, a Rochester, Minn., native now in his second season with the Chicago Steel. A 6’4.5”, 195 lb., right shot, he has a goal and four assists in 17 games this season, along with the shootout winner (video) in a recent 6-5 win against Madison. A physical, defensive-minded blueliner, Hady is the third member of the Steel committed to BU, joining forwards Jack Harvey and Macklin Celebrini.

Hady, who will be 19 next summer, played 23 games with the Steel a year ago, recording one assist, He spent the previous two seasons with Sioux Falls Power 16U AAA and the season before that with Rochester Mayo High School.  A strong performance for Sioux Falls Power in the 2021 Nationals led to his selection by the Steel in the 2021 USHL Phase 2 Draft.

During Hady’s initial season in Chicago, the team’s then-head coach Brock Sheahan observed:

"At our camp last summer, we saw that Hunter has a lot of room to grow in his skating, but the way he thinks the game, it's at such a high level that he was able to play with the type of kids we have here in our organization. The way we play, if you can't think the game, it's really tough to play for us."

2023 recruit Shane Lachance scored his team-leading 10th goal and 2024 recruit Brandon Svoboda notched his third as Youngstown defeated the NTDP U17s, 6-1.

2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy scored his third goal in the last two games as Muskegon bounced Madison, 8-3.  A right-shot defenseman and younger brother of Case McCarthy, he leads the Lumberjacks in scoring with a 3-12-15 line. McCarthy has been named to the Team USA roster for next months World Junior A Challenge.

Celebrini scored his 10th goal for the Steel in a 4-3 overtime loss to Dubuque. Newest recruit Hady was +1 in the game.

 

2023 recruit Jack Gorton's second-period unassisted goal was the game-winner as Victoria edge Cowichan Valley, 2-1. For the 6'3" right wing, it was his fifth goal. With 17 points in 20 games, Gorton is second in scoring for the Grizzlies.

 

Looking back

Vinny Purpura stopped 32 of 34 shots as LIU upset #12 Ohio State, 3-2, for the Sharks’ first-ever win against a ranked team.

Brady Tkachuk scored his eighth goal as Ottawa thumped the Ducks, 5-1.

 

Women’s Team

Terriers dropped a 2-0 decision to Yale in the opening game of the Henderson Collegiate Hockey Showcase in Henderson, Nev. The #5 Elis broke a scoreless ties 15 minutes into the third period and then added a second tally. BU dominated the middle period with a 15-6 shot advantage but couldn’t’ put one pas Pia Dukaric. Grad student Andrea Brändli stopped 30 Yale shots. BU will face #12 Penn State today in the tournament consolation game.
