Terriers rally to tie, but lose to U18s in OT UPDATED

BU’s annual exhibition against the NTDP U18 was a high-scoring affair with the Terriers rallying from a 5-2 deficit to tie only to lose on a power play goal in overtime. BU goal scorers were Ethan Phillips, Sam Stevens, Matt Brown, Wilmer Skoog and Lane Hutson. Vinnie Duplessis stopped 33 shots.

Line-up regulars Jay O’Brien, Ryan Greene, Case McCarthy, Dom Fensore and Cade Webber were given the afternoon off and with the lines and defensive pairs shuffled, the Terriers got off to a rocky start.

Just one minute in Oliver Moore got a step on the BU defense and beat Duplessis five hole. Terriers evened the scored at 8:20 on a two-man-advantage. Jeremy Wilmer set up Phillips on a back door play. 2023 recruit Michael Chambre stopped the initial shot but Phillips smacked the rebound home.

The U18s owned the rest of the period taking the lead on a snipe by Ryan Leonard, followed by goals from Alex Weiermair—assisted by 2024 recruit Kai Janviriya—and Gabe Perreault for a 4-1 lead after one.

Early in the second period, BU got some puck luck. Stevens took a pass from Jamie Armstrong and raced down the left side. His sharp-angle shot grazed a defenseman’s stick and then went off Chambre’s shoulder into the net.

Perrault’s second goal, at 14:16 restored the three-goal deficit, but BU responded in the final minute of the period. Brown stole the puck in the neutral zone, sped up ice, beating two defenders and fired a shot past Chambre to make it 5-3 after two.

Brown’s late tally gave BU a spark entering the third period. In the opening minute, Skoog picked a defender’s pocket in the high slot, waited for a defenseman to commit and zipped a shot past Chambre on the blocker side.

Less that two minutes later, Hutson took matters into his own hands. After passes from Phillips and Lachlan Getz, he skated through the left circle, started around the cage, then stopped and slid the puck through the paint. Dylan Peterson’s attempt was stopped but Hutson followed and slid the puck home to knot the score at five apiece. At that point, Chambre was replaced in goal by Trey Augustine.

The teams combined for 25 shots in the final period (14 for BU, 11 for the U18s) with both goalies defending grade A chances. With 4:30 left in regulation, Getz rang a shot from the left point off the post.

As time wound down, Lane Hutson was called for holding and the penalty extended into overtime. With 15 seconds left in the U18's 4-on-3 power play, Moore brought the puck into the high slot and wristed a shot past a screened Duplessis.

Final shots in regulation were 36 apiece and the U18s had all three overtime shots. BU had the edge in the face off circle winning 37 of 25 draws, including 12 of 17 for Skoog.

“I thought we started off really slow today,” said Coach Jay Pandolfo addressing the results of the first period. “Sometimes it’s tough, an exhibition game at two o’clock in the afternoon. I thought we were better in the second than in the first. I thought we had more to give. The guys woke up [in the third] and started pushing it.”

Asked about the two future Terriers on the U18s, he explained, “I thought they both played very well. It was unfortunate for Chambre that we got two quick ones in the third and they decided to take him out.”

Pandolfo pointed out that Chambre had recently returned from an injury, had only played a few games and “just trying to find his game.”

“[Janviriya] played very well defensively, moved the puck very well, so I was really impressed with him tonight,” he added.

Asked what might be in a scouting report on undrafted senior  Brown, Pandolfo pointed out, “He drives our offense with his speed. He’s taken more ownership of playing well in the defensive zone first before trying to go on offense. I’m sure there’s teams watching him. He’s producing every night.”

Prior to today’s game (1G,1A), Brown had points in five of the last six games and has already equaled last season’s 17 total points and seven goals.

BU resume conference action next Friday when it begins a home-and-home series with New Hampshire in Durham.
