Doubleheader Sweep! Men defeat Union; Terrier Takeaway; Women blank Huskies; Keller OT GWG

 


#3 Terriers shook off a sluggish start and poured 44 shots on goal as they defeated Union College, 4-1, before a crowd of 4,954 at Agganis Arena. The win gave the BU hockey teams a doubleheader sweep as the women’s team blanked Northeastern, 4-0, earlier on Saturday. BU improves its record to 2-0-0. Sophomore Jack Harvey led the attack with a goal and an assist.

BU scored three times in the first period—twice on power plays—on tallies by co-captain Shane Lachance and freshmen Alex Zetterberg and Cole Eiserman.

Senior goalie Mathieu Caron stopped 36 Garnet Chargers' shots and had to be extra sharp in the opening period when Union put 17 shots on goal.

The visitors, who had defeated Stonehill on Friday night, had the upper hand in the first six minutes, forcing Caron to make some big saves.

Addressing the opening period, Coach Jay Pandolfo didn’t mince words during the post-game press conference, saying “That’s unacceptable from our group.” He added that Caron “was the only one ready to play for us, that’s for sure.”

BU got on the board at 8:39 when Quinn Hutson stripped the puck from a defender along the boards and centered it to Lachance in the left circle. The 6’5” forward quickly kicked the puck to his forehand and lasered a shot past Kyle Chauvette high to the glove side.

Two minutes later with BU on a power play, Zetterberg connected for his second goal in two games, one-timing a cross-ice pass from Harvey off the crossbar and past Chauvette. Tom Willander had the second assist. 

After the game Pandolfo praised the Swedish wing's effort, explaining, "Tonight, he was excellent. He’s just a really smart player. He makes the right plays at the right time. He’s two steps ahead of his opponents…He’s a competitive kid... I thought he was arguably our best forward tonight."

Caron came up big again with seven minutes left in the period, making a sprawling save on Jacob Jennette’s shot from just outside the left post.

Near the end of the period with BU having another man-advantage, Eiserman and Cole Hutson combined for a highlight-reel goal. Hutson took the puck end-to-end and, as he took a big hit, found Eiserman in the slot, who went five-hole to make it 3-0.

Midway through the second period, Union cut into the Terriers' lead when Parker Lindauer scored on a sharp-angle shot from just below the BU goal line.

At 16:22 with BU having extended possession in the Union zone, Harvey scored from in close, converting the rebound of Kamil Bednarik’s shot from the slot. Brehdan Engum earned his first point as a Terrier, recording the second assist. 

Caron faced another 12 shots in a scoreless third period, but the Terrier defense made sure there were no second-chance opportunities. Both Quinn Hutson and Eiserman had good scoring opportunities with each taking three shots in the period.

Engum, seeing his first ice time this season, had a pair of blocks and dished out several heavy hits behind the BU net.

Terriers won 33 of 63 face offs, with co-captain Ryan Green controlling 11 of 17.

BU killed all five Union power plays and has foiled nine out 10 in two games.

Fourth Liner's Terrier Takeaways

- The story of the game was largely the play of Mathieu Caron.  He was fantastic – especially in the first period during which BU was outshot and let a number of Union skaters get behind BU’s defense.  If Caron plays like this all season, the Terriers are going to have a great chance to win in every game.

- BU was clearly the more skilled team and the team is fun to watch.  Credit to Union, though, they are a fast team that plays with good structure.  It was tough for BU to get to the front of Union’s net.

- Zetterberg had a great night.  Every time the puck is on his stick, it seems like something good happens.  And he found the back of the net again.  The fourth line (as a group) was good again for the Terriers.

- The Coles were also very good again tonight.  Cole Hutson had a number of nice moves, made a fantastic pass and sacrificed his body to get the puck to Cole Eiserman on the third goal.  Every time Eiserman shoots the puck, I feel like he is going to find the back of the net.  He is electric.

- It was good to see Engum get game action.  He appears to be strong defensively, and had two big-impact hits.

- This BU team has some snarl, which is great to see.  Kaplan, Engum, Lachance and Eiserman all had good hits and were physical.  Although not perfect, BU did a better job (compared to last week) of remaining disciplined and staying out of the box tonight.  

  

Looking ahead

2025 recruit John McNelis scored his fourth goal in Sioux Falls’ 5-3 win over Cedar Rapids. The left-shot forward leads the Stampede with five points in six games.

2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence scored his third goal as Muskegon beat Des Moines, 4-3.

Looking back

Clayton Keller’s second goal of the game was the overtime game-winner as Utah defeated the Rangers, 6-5, at Madison Square Garden. He has a 3-3-6 line in three games.

Jordan Greenway scored his first goal in Buffalo’s 5-2 win against Florida. AJ Greer and Evan Rodrigues each had an assist for the Panthers.

Lane Hutson recorded his third assist in three games as Montreal defeated Ottawa, 4-1. Brady Tkachuk had an assist for the Senators.


Women’s Team


One day after being shut out on the road by Northeastern, 4-0, Terriers reversed the story with a convincing shut out victory by the same 4-0 score. Lola Reid, Riley Walsh, Sydney Healey and Clara Yuhn were the goal-scorers, while senior goaltender Callie Shanahan stopped all 25 shots she faced as BU evened its record at 2-2-0.

Reid opened the scoring just 4:26 into the opening period when she stole the puck at the left circle, faked a pass and ripped a shot past goalie Lisa Jonsson high to the stick side.

The middle period was scoreless with BU clamping down on the Huskies attack. NU was limited to three shots after firing six in the first period.

Seven minutes into the third period, Healey and Walsh combining on a two-on-one with Walsh, a transfer from Union, netting her second tally.

Northeastern poured 16 shots on goal, attempting to cut into the lead, but Shanahan stopped them all. Healey and Yuhn added empty-net goals for the final 4-0 score.

For Shanahan, it was her fourth career shutout.
