UPDATED: Terriers bounce back, edge UND, 4-3; Women sweep Syracuse

Rebounding from Friday night’s very sub-par performance, #3 Terrier held off #7 North Dakota for a gritty 4-3 win before another sellout crowd at Englestad Arena. BU broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with Devin Kaplan’s short-handed tally and Tom Willander’s power-play blast. UND added a late goal but got no closer. Ryan Green and Jack Harvey had the first two Terrier goals and Mathieu Caron returned to form, stopping 29 of 32 shots.

"Real happy with the response from our group," Coach Jay Pandolfo said. "Credit to our leadership group. Right from the drop of the puck, those guys were ready to play and everyone followed. Mathieu Caron bouncing back was awesome to see.. The effort was there from start to finish from our guys."

The win elicited a déjà vu flashback to the early-season series at Michigan in October of 2022, when BU suffered a 9-2 defeat—and the loss to injury of Drew Commesso—before taking a hard-fought 3-2 win the next night. The Wolverines are the Terriers' next opponent, coming to Agganis for a two-game series.

BU got on the board first, late in an evenly-played opening period on Greene’s power-play goal. Cole Eiserman sent the puck to Cole Hutson at center point. Hutson drifted to his left and slid the puck to Greene who had rotated to the high slot, and the co-captain whipped home a 40-footer as Shane Lachance took the goalies away with a well-timed screen. It was Greene’s third goal of the campaign.

The Fighting Hawks drew even at 7:36 of the second period, scoring on the rush. Caleb McDonald took a pass in the left circle and beat Caron.

In the final minute of the period, UND had an odd-man rush entering the BU zone but turned the puck over. Matt Copponi quickly sent a headman pass to Harvey behind the Fighting Hawks defense for a clean breakaway. The sophomore wing coolly beat TJ Semptimphelter five-hole to send BU into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead. The tally was Harvey's second of the season.

Midway through the third period and shortly after an Eiserman breakaway was foiled, an iffy tripping call on Brandon Svoboda gave the home team a man-advantage. It took Cameron Berg just 24 seconds to tie the score.

A penalty to Mick Frechette presented North Dakota a chance to grab the lead, but BU flipped the script with a shorthanded marker. Near the end of the penalty kill, Sascha Boumedienne blocked a shot in the right circle. Harvey pushed it ahead to Kaplan and the duo raced ahead on a two-on-one. In the UND zone, Kaplan veered to the slot and zipped a low shot past Semptimphelter's glove for a 3-2 lead. It was Kaplan's first goal of the season and Boumedienne's first collegiate point.

Two minutes later, BU was on its fifth man-advantage of the game and generated its second power-play goal.  With power-play time nearly expired, Kaplan hustled to the boards and backhanded the puck to Willander, who slid a few strides to center point and snapped a hard wrist shot that sailed past the UND netminder's glove, extending BU's lead to 4-2.

The Fighting Hawks pulled Semptimphelter for an extra skater with three minutes remaining in regulation. Jake Livanavage scored with two minutes left to go on a shot that hit Kaplan's stick and then Willander's skate before eluding Caron..

BU was able to minimize UND's time in the offensive zone the rest of the way. They took their timeout with 15 seconds remaining and managed to get one shot off, which Lachance blocked. It was BU's 18th block of the evening.

 defkit's Terrier Takeaway

- Kudos to the team and the coaching staff for bouncing back from an ugly loss to quickly "right the ship". These are the games that ultimately determine what level of success the team will achieve, and to pull out a win under these circumstances gives the team (and fans) a lot of confidence.

- Caron was outstanding all game long and weathered the storm in the second period when UND had the clear edge in possession and opportunities. The late goal by Harvey in that period provided a huge lift to the team, and they played much better in the third.

On his breakaway goal, Harvey again showed ability to finish in close, as he did with his shootout goal against Harvard.

- Great to see Kaplan have such a big goal after being somewhat quiet and primarily hitting the scoresheet in the penalty column so far this season. The play fittingly started on a blocked shot by Boumedienne, as the team seems to have improved their shot-blocking prowess as the season has progressed.

- Willander's game has taken a step in the right direction this season. He is playing at a high level more consistently than last year, which is a big help given the upperclassmen that we lost from last season. And he's getting pucks on net--he had a goal and a post against UConn.

- North Dakota is a highly skilled team, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them reach the Frozen Four. Perron has tremendous speed and Boisvert came as advertised. On the back end, Emery also impressed.

- A split on the road against a top-10 team is a solid result. Hopefully, the team can keep the momentum going and come up with a couple wins against Michigan next weekend.

Behind Lola Reid's third goal of the weekend and Sydney Healey's third of the season, Terriers completed a road sweep of Syracuse with a 3-2 win. It was BU's fifth consecutive win and improves the team's record to 6-3-0.

After a scoreless opening period, BU connected on a power play at 15:52 of the second. Healy scored with assists going to Christina Vote and Lindsay Bochna.

Syracuse tied the score on former Terrier Jackson Kinsler's goal with 10 seconds remaining in the middle period.

Riley Walsh, a transfer from Union, gave BU the lead for good early in the third period, assisted by Clara Yuhn and Kaleigh Quigg.

Then midway through the third Reid scored the eventual game-winner from Kiera Healey and Tamara Giaquinto.

Syracuse added one more goal to keep it close, but the Terriers protected the one-goal margin the rest of the way.

Reid now has a 6-5-11scoring line in nine games and leads Hockey East in goals and points. Her +10 also is best in the conference. Reid’s six goals on 23 shots gives her a .261 shooting percentage. Four of her six goals have been game-winners.

Mari Petersen stopped 16 of 18 shots.
