UPDATED: Willander named D-o-W; Tuch scores!, SNL, Third R-o-W award for Reid

Sophomore Tom Willander’s, who scored Saturday's game-winning goal and also had an assist on Friday, is Hockey East's Defender of the Week. He also had three blocks and six shots in the weekend series. The power-play tally was the Stockholm native's second game-winner as a Terrier. Willander also scored a week ago against UConn. He currently has points in five consecutive games, a career best.

In addition, two Terriers were named to Hockey East's Top Performers list:

Devin Kaplan, BU (Jr., F; Bridgewater, N.J.) Helped the Terriers to a 4-3 win at #7 North Dakota on Saturday night, scoring a shorthanded goal to break a 2-2 tie at 12:28 of the third before having the primary assist on Tom Willander’s eventual game-winner at 16:08.

Cole Hutson, BU (Fr., D; Chicago, Ill.) Recorded two assists in a weekend split at No. 7 North Dakota, blocking three shots in the process.

 

Poll Story


After splitting the series with North Dakota, Terriers fell from #3 to #5 in the USCHO D1 Weekly Poll, as #4 Michigan St. and #5 Minnesota moved up a notch. DU and BC remain #1 and #2. North Dakota move up to #6. Next weekend’s opponent, Michigan, slipped one spot to #11.

The USA Hockey/The Rink Inside poll had the same first five, with Maine and North Dakota remaining at #6 and #7 respectively. Lowell, which doubled up Merrimack on Saturday and has won four in a row, is in the #19 spot. The River Hawks will face BU in two weeks.

►In John Buccigross’ ranking, BU remains at #5. Also #5 on the Everything College Hockey ranking.

►Terriers are currently second in the Pairwise rankings behind defending champion Denver.  BU is third, behind DU and Maine, in CHN’s Power Rankings which also has the Terriers fifth in strength of schedule

►It was a happy flight back home following Saturday Night's 4-3 win in Grand Forks. Here's The Boston Hockey Blog's recap of the game. 

►ICYMI, check out defkit’s Terrier Takeaway on Saturday’s victory.

►With one power-play goal on Friday and two on Saturday, the Terriers have at least one power-play goal in each of their five games. When a man up, BU is clicking at 30.4% (7 for 23).

 

►Devin Kaplan’s first goal of the season—and his first shorthanded goal as a Terrier—did not go over well with Fighting Hawks fans who responded to his celebration with different kind of digital display. A+ for this photo from Boston Hockey Blog’s Annika Morris, who also wrote the BHB recap linked above.

►Saturday night's Player of the Game awards went to Kaplan (sledgehammer) and Matt Copponi (helmet), whose headman pass sent Jack Harvey in for a breakaway goal.

►BU Hockey Stats once again has the advanced analytics for both games at UND.

►In preseason remarks, Coach Jay Pandolfo suggested that the Terrier offense would likely be “by committee” and, so far, that has been the case. Shane Lachance leads with six points and five skaters—Cole Eiserman, Ryan Greene, Jack Harvey, Quinn Hutson and Willander—each have five.

►Sophomores Gavin McCarthy and Mick Frechette are the team leaders in blocked shots with nine apiece.

►From our friend, BurntBoats, who is not a fan of the late 1970s unis BU wore over the weekend. The first time was Dylan Peterson’s game-winning in the 2022 Beanpot final; the second was Kaplan’s SHG.

►Union College, whom BU defeated, 4-1, is otherwise undefeated and, with a 6-1-0 record, sits at #13 in Pairwise, one slot ahead of UConn.

Looking ahead

2025 recruit John McNelis scored his seventh goal as Sioux Falls blanked Omaha, 5-0. The Potomac, Maryland, native is tied for the USHL lead in goals. Last season, he scored 18 goals and earned USHL All-Rookie second team honors. (In case you were wondering, future Terrier Mikhail Yegorov was NOT in goal for the Lancers.)

2025 recruit Jack Murtagh, who had missed nine games due to an injury, scored his fourth goal in five games since his return and also added an assist in the NTDP U18s 5-3 loss to Adrian College. 

Looking back

Brady Tkachuk scored his fourth goal and added two assists—all in the third period—but it wasn’t enough as Colorado edged Ottawa, 5-4.

Luke Tuch scored his first two AHL goals--the second was the game-winner--as Laval beat Utica, 4-3.

Women’s Team

For the second week in a row, freshman Lola Reid is the conference’s top rookie. The 6’0” forward from Lincoln, Nebraska, who also claimed R-O-W honors after the first week of the season, scored three goals in the weekend series, including both game-winners. Reid leads the team and the conference with a 6-5-11 scoring line.

►Boston Hockey Blog’s recap of the Terriers’ sweep of Syracuse features “emerging star” Reid and the team’s status atop Hockey East.  

“She’s showing ya,” head coach Watchorn said postgame on Friday, “she’s got a knack for scoring.”

And behind her team-leading 11 points, the Terriers are 6-3. It’s the program’s best record over the first nine games of a season since 2014.

Terriers received 10 votes in the latest USCHO poll, but remain unranked.
