Gilroy joins NTDP coaching staff; Zegras a Calder finalist

Matt Gilroy, a three-time All-American defenseman, who led BU to the 2009 national championship and won that year's Hobey Baker Memorial Award, has been named to the USA Hockey NTDP staff as an assistant coach for next season's U17 squad.

The North Bellmore, N.Y., native scored 92 points in his four seasons at BU. He signed a free-agent contract with the New York Rangers and also played for Tampa Bay, Ottawa and Florida in five NHL seasons. Gilroy later played in the KHL, making the all-star game twice, and in Finland.

In 2018, he skated for Team USA in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, S. Korea. Among his teammates on that squad was John McCarthy, his fellow co-captain on the 2009 championship squad. McCarthy was recently named head coach of the AHL San Jose Barracuda. Both Gilroy and McCarthy had been walk-ons at BU.

Among the defensemen that Gilroy will be mentoring next season is Cole Hutson, younger brother of incoming freshmen LD Lane Hutson and RW Quinn Hutson.

More draft previews

The buzz around Lane Hutson ahead of next month's NHL Entry Draft continues. NHL.com's Mike Morreale suggests that if the still-growing Hutson was two inches taller, he'd be among the first names called in the draft.

The Athletic's Cory Pronman included 2022 recruit Devin Kaplan, a 6-2 power forward, on his list of draft picks with the most upside potential:

Devin Kaplan, RW, USNTDP-USHL
Whenever I’ve watched Kaplan over the last two years I’ve come away quite impressed by the skill set. As a tall forward with good puck skills who can create offense there is a lot of potential in his game. His performance this season was quite inconsistent offensively, even if I saw other elements like how he uses his body. If he puts it all together an NHL team could get a real player.

TheHockeyWriters.com offers a profile on 2022 recruit Ryan Greene, a 6-2 right-shot center who led Green Bay in scoring with 51 points last season.

Ryan Greene is a Canadian centerman who plays for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL. He finished the regular season with 19 goals and 32 assists in 59 games and ranked 30th in league scoring.

Greene is a two-way forward who makes his presence known on both sides of the puck. His best offensive tool is his playmaking, though he does occasionally flash some high-end skill on the rush when he can put together his above-average puck-handling and excellent speed.

However, Greene’s speed and agility are more consistently on display in the defensive zone. He is always searching the ice to find the best pass that his opponent could make so that he can get there first and cut it off. His speed and effort are never in question, as he is just as likely to empty his tank while racing back on the backcheck as he is when he chases down a puck for a breakaway.

Looking back

Trevor Zegras, who scored 61 points (23G,38A)--and led the NHL with six shootout goals--as an Anaheim Ducks rookie, is a finalist for the NHL's Calder Trophy. The only Terrier to win the Calder Trophy is current Rangers President Chris Drury, who won it in 1998-99, a year after winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
