Media Day: Coaches pick BU for 6th; scribes say 3rd [UPDATED]

At Hockey East’s annual Media Day, held at TD Garden, Head Coach David Quinn was joined by junior captain Matt Grzelcyk and senior assistant captain Evan Rodrigues and all three expressed optimism about a bounce-back season for the Terriers. Quinn asserted that he “really like[s] the core we have coming back. I like the freshmen class we have coming in to surround them.”  He added, ““Our guys are excited obviously, to get the season going, but I think they’re a little bit more excited because they understand what our chances are [of] having a lot more success than last year.”

Grzelcyk, who missed nearly all of the second semester last season due to a shoulder injury, reported that he feels “100 percent,” and, commenting on the large and talented freshman class, said  “They’ve done really well, both on and off the ice.”

A return by Rodrigues to the form of his very productive (14-20-34) sophomore year is one of the keys to a successful season. He pointed out that “Polls are polls, people have their opinions, and it’s just our job to go out there and play our best every time we hit the ice, and the standings and everything will take care of itself.”

The poll that the senior right wing was alluding to was the Hockey East Coaches Poll, revealed today, in which BU was picked for sixth.  On Sunday, the Hockey East writers’ poll projected the Terriers three spots higher in third place [THFB’s ballot had BU 4th]. In both polls, Providence and Boston College held the first and second spots.

Thursday night’s CM/USA Hockey All American Prospects Game in Buffalo will be broadcast live on NHL Network with puck drop at 7 p.m. Freshman Jack Eichel and 2015 recruit Jordan Greenway will be teammates on Team Grier, coached by former BU All-American and longtime NHLer Mike Grier.

UPDATE: NHL Network will replay the game Friday and Sunday, both at 1 p.m. ET. In addition to his stint as coach for the AAPG, Grier is now a pro scout for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Both Eichel and Greenway (photo) have been projected as first-round choices in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by The Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy.

Eichel will take over the USA Hockey Twitter to take questions this Wednesday

Looking back
Getting acquainted with his new team, Vancouver, and new linemates, former Terrier Nick Bonino talks with CBC Sports about his on-ice philosophy:

"If you're the type of player I am who wants to make plays, wants to make passes, you can't settle into a dump-and-chase game and make the safe play because at the end of the day you're going to get nowhere with it."

Women’s Team
The three-time defending champion Terriers took first place in the Hockey East Coaches Poll, released today. BU and arch-rival BC each recorded four first-place votes, but the Terriers’ point total of 53 was two better than the Eagles’ total.

In USCHO’s first national poll, BU finished sixth with one first place vote. Minnesota holds the top spot.

Led by Head Coach Brian Durocher, entering his 10th campaign behind the BU bench, the Terriers will take on Queens University at Walter Brown Arena this Saturday in an exhibition game.  The Terriers will then head to Minneapolis to begin regular season play against the St. Cloud State Huskies and Minnesota Golden Gophers.
