The dream falls short; Providence rallies for 4-3 win UPDATED

The third period, BU's strength throughout the season, proved the Terriers' undoing in the national championship game as they allowed two late goals that gave Providence a 4-3 win and its first-ever NCAA title.

BU had taken a 3-2 lead in the second period on senior Cason Hohmann's goal, after the Terriers had received goals four seconds apart in the first period from Ahti Oksanen and Danny O'Regan.

As the third period began, Providence pressed hard for the equalizer and enjoyed a substantial shot advantage through the first 11 minutes. Then Tom Parisi lofted a seeming harmless shot toward Matt O'Connor, who gloved it but seemed indecisive about where to toss it and let it drop to the ice. It trickled through his legs into the goal, knotting the score at three apiece.  Just over two minutes later, the Friars had an offensive-zone draw that Kevin Rooney won, sending the puck to Brandon Tanev, who skated unmarked into the slot and whipped a hard shot past O'Connor for a 4-3 PC lead.

In the final six minutes, BU had numerous scoring opportunities, including a deflection by Nick Roberto and a near conversion of a goalmouth rebound by Hohmann; but the Friars' Jon Gillies turned them all aside. And then, the clock ran out on the Terriers and their dream season.

Three Terriers were named to the All-Tournament team: Jack Eichel, Ahti Oksanen, and Matt Grzelcyk.
