“They skated and competed, and we didn’t.” That’s how Coach
David Quinn described the Terriers’ 3-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Maine
Black Bears. It was the third time this season that BU has failed to score.
After a scoreless first period in which BU’s best scoring
chance was freshman Logan Cockerill hitting iron, Maine dominated the second
period, outshooting the Terriers, 18 to 9 and scoring twice, aided by four BU
penalties. Nolan Vesey scored on a power play at 6:39. Five minutes later Ryan
Smith redirected a pass past Jake Oettinger.
BU had a 14-5 shot advantage in the third period, but the
Black Bears produced the only goal when Brendan Robbins converted on a 2-on-1
rush.
Oettinger stopped 34 shots, while Jeremy Swayman—Oettinger’s
teammate on Team USA one day earlier—turned aside all 31 Terrier shots.
