Confirming recent online reports, former Terrier captain Joe Pereira has been named associate head coach on newly-named head coach Jay Pandolfo's staff.
"He is an outstanding recruiter who has established himself as one of
the top young coaches in college hockey," Pandolfo said. "As a former captain and
national champion here, Joe knows what it takes to win at BU and
understands what it means to be a Terrier. He will be a terrific
addition to our program and I'm looking forward to working with him."
The West Haven, Connecticut native spent the past nine seasons on Mike Cavanaugh's staff at UConn, the last four as associate head coach. Considered to be one of the bright lights among younger college coaches, Periera's "expertise is certainly on the recruiting trail, as he’s built a number of very good connections and is adept at building relationships with advisors and junior coaches," as reported by NEHJ's Jeff Cox.
Following a pair of 25-goal seasons at South Kent Prep, Pereira headed to BU in 2006. Over four campaigns, he produced 61 points, including a 15-6-21 line as a senior when he served as captain. As a sophomore in 2008-09, he skated on BU's fourth line, helping the team to the Beanpot, Hockey East and NCAA titles.
A two-time recipient of the Bennett McInnis Memorial Award for Spirit, he was also selected as the Friends/Albert Sidd Unsung Hero as a senior captain and earned Hockey East All-Academic honors.
After 10 games in the AHL and a season in the ECHL, Pereira began his coaching career as head coach of Sacred Heart's ACHA team.

► With today's announcement, BU has one more assistant spot to fill. Both Cox and College Hockey Insider's Mike McMahon have reported that Assistant Coach Len Quesnelle will not return next season and that Pandolfo is seeking a skills assistant, “more well-versed in development.” Both reporters have mentioned as a possibility Bruins skating consultant Kim Brandvold, a UMass Lowell alum, with whom Pandolfo has previously worked. Brandvold had also been a skills and skating coach for former Terrier Jack Eichel.
Cox further reported that according to NHL sources, former BU head coach Albie O'Connell will be joining the Montreal Canadians "in a scouting capacity."

John McCarthy, co-captain of BU’s 2009 national champions and longtime member of the San Jose Sharks organization, has been named head coach of the team’s AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. His 11-year playing career with the organization ended during the 2019-20 season when he suffered an Ischemic stroke due to an undetected hole in his heart. McCarthy returned to the Barracuda as an assistant coach and then served as a development coach for the next two seasons.
McCarthy will become the seventh former Terrier to lead an AHL club, joining John Hynes, David Quinn, Joe Sacco, Steve Stirling, Mike Sullivan and Clark Donatelli. All of those six, except Donatelli, later became NHL head coaches.
A standout in both hockey and football at St. John’s Prep, McCarthy came to BU as a walk-on in 2005-06 and established himself on the fourth line as he excelled as a penalty-killer for the team that won the 2006 Hockey East title. By his senior season, he’d moved up to the second line, skating with Nick Bonino and Brandon Yip and producing a 6-23-29 scoring line.
After BU, he signed with the Sharks, who had drafted him in 2006, playing primarily for the then Worcester Sharks in the AHL but also had several stints with the Sharks, including 37 NHL games in 2010-11. He went West with the AHL affiliate when it relocated in 2015.
Over his long tenure with the Sharks organization as player, he skated in 88 NHL games (3-3-6) and 577 AHL games (130-167-297). He was captain of the Barracuda in each of his final four seasons.
McCarthy was a member of the U.S. Olympic Hockey team for the 2018 Winter Games in PyongChang, South Korea, along with former Terriers Chris Bourque, Jordan Greenway, and Matt Gilroy (who was the other 2009 BU co-captain).
Sharks’ GM Joe Will said, “John McCarthy is a natural fit as the next head coach of the San Jose Barracuda. His leadership skills and professionalism, matched with his hockey IQ, have allowed him to succeed throughout his long and distinguished career with the Sharks and Barracuda. These traits, which he showed extensively as part of our player development staff over the last two years, will be a great asset for our developing players.”
