As widely anticipated, freshmen Macklin Celebrini and Tom Willander have been named to the pre-tournament rosters for their nation’s entries in the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championships—Celebrini for Canada and Willander for Sweden. The WJCs, which begin on December 26, are taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden, bringing Stockholm native Willander close to home.

Both skaters represented their countries last Spring in the IIHF World U18 Championships. Willander helped Sweden win a silver medal, leading all tournament defensemen in goals with three while adding five assists. Currently he has eight points (3G,5A) and his +13 is tops in Hockey East.

Celebrini, from Vancouver, BC, led Canada to the bronze medal at the WorldU18s, matching the national single-tournament record with 17 points (6G,11A) with two goals, including the OT game-winner, in the bronze medal game. He leads Hockey East and is third in the NCAA with 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists. No freshman in the nation has scored more goals or recorded more points than Celebrini,  For the month of October, he earned both Hockey East Player of the Month and National Rookie of the Month honors.

Earlier in the week, Lane Hutson was named to the U.S. roster for the Junior National Team selection camp.

Lane Hutson, BU (So., D; North Barrington, Ill.) Tied for the league lead with four assists in a two-win weekend over Merrimack, including three helpers in Friday’s 4-1 road victory.

Mathieu Caron, BU (Jr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) Finished a weekend sweep of Merrimack with 45 saves and allowed just one even-strength goal in each victory. Caron was the only Hockey East goaltender to win twice this past weekend.

This week’s episode of Terrier Hockey Talk features the Boston Hockey Blog crew examining the weekend sweep of Merrimack and reflecting on BU’s first semester. They also address the Women’s Team’s hard-luck loss to Northeastern and the road ahead.
