As widely expected, All-American and Hobey Baker Award winner Macklin Celebrini has signed a3-year, entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks, who had made him the #1 overall selection in last month's draft.
Celebrini made his decision at the conclusion of Sharks development camp, which he attended along with incoming freshman forward Brandon Svoboda, whom San Jose drafted in 2023. He told the media:
"I tried to keep everything open until the end of the week, Friday. After my exit meetings, once I got back to the hotel, I kind of knew. That was when it really sunk in with me, that I knew what I had to do. Every time I thought about coming to the Sharks, I was just really excited."
"Thank you to all my coaches, teammates and everyone at BU who had such a positive impact on my development as a player and as a person. I truly enjoyed my time on campus and am so grateful to call myself a Terrier."The signing was announced by San Jose GM Mike Grier, also a BU All-America, who pointed out that Celebrini "kind of has that alpha mentality that made us believe he's ready to handle the ups and downs and the rigors of an NHL season."
Terrier Head Coach Jay Pandolfo, who had previously stated he supported whichever decision the 18 year old phenom made, offered his congratulations.
"On behalf of our entire program I want to congratulate Macklin on signing his first professional contract," he said. "Macklin is not only a terrific player but a terrific person and we're all excited to watch him shine at the next level."
Celebrini is the 15th Terrier selected in the first round of the NHL draft since 2014 and the sixth to play just one season before making the jump the NHL. Those six are Jack Eichel, Clayton Keller, Brady Tkachuk, Joel Farabee, Trevor Zegras and Celebrini. Other first-rounders: Charlie McAvory, Dante Fabbro, Kieffer Bellows, Jake Oettinger, Shane Bowers, Jay O'Brien (as a Providence recruit), Tyler Boucher, Tom Willander and Cole Eiserman.
