BU sweeps R-O-W awards; Poll Story; SNL; The best 2025 recruit class?; Yegorov claims USHL goalie of the week

Heralded freshman Cole Eiserman, who scored twice, including the game-winner, against Connecticut, is Hockey East's Rookie of the Week. A first-round draft pick by the Islanders in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, the Newburyport, Mass., native also had single goals against Holy Cross and Union. No other NCAA rookie has more goals this season than Eiserman, who is the NTDP's career goal-scoring leader with 127.  Here's the first of the two tallies.

►Two Terriers who were instrumental in Friday's win were named to Hockey East's Top Performers list.

Tom Willander, BU (So., D; Stockholm, Sweden) Fired home an insurance goal in the Terriers’ 4-2 victory over UConn on Friday night. Willander was a plus-three against the Huskies in another terrific effort on the back end.

Mathieu Caron, BU (Sr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) Made 24 saves in the Terriers’ 4-2 win over UConn on Friday, including several acrobatic stops early in the contest to keep the Terriers in it.

Willander, who is +4 thus far, led BU last season with +26.

Poll Story


Following Friday's win against UConn,Terriers remain at #3 in the USCHO Division 1 Ice Hockey Poll. The rest of last week's top four remains unchanged: #1 Denver, #2 BC and #4 Michigan State. However, North Dakota, who will host BU for two games this weekend, fell from #5 to #7 after splitting a series with Minnesota State, winning, 3-2, then losing, 3-0. Minnesota replaced the Fighting Hawks at #5.

Conference rival Maine jumped up three spots to #6 after sweeping Merrimack. Providence moved up a notch to #13, while UMass remained at #15 despite losing one of two to Sacred Heart.

The USA Hockey/The Rink Inside Division 1 poll has the same first nine as USCHO, but with Quinnipiac, rather than Michigan, in the #10 spot. Providence is #12 and UMass #16.

John Buccigross' ranking has the Terriers at #5, while Everything College Hockey has slotted BU at #3.

We’ll start with the Players of the Game awards. The BU jacket awarded last season has been replaced by a sledgehammer and a not-too-sure-what-it-is helmet.

►BU Hockey Stats reports that Jay Pandolfo recorded his 60th win as a head coach Friday, the 3rd fastest in program history (83 Games Coached) to reach that milestone behind Jack Parker (74 GC) and Harry Cleverly (80 GC).  

 

►Former Terrier captain, All-American and 2009 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Matt Gilroy returned to Agganis Arena as a Harvard assistant coach. He had spent the past few seasons as an assistant coach for the NTDP U18s, working with Cole Hutson and others. A “welcome back” video feature on Gilroy was shown on the message board prior to the game. 

►Saturday night's matchup with Harvard was the first between the schools at Agganis Arena since December 3rd, 2019, when BU claimed a 5-2 win led by a goal and two assists from Patrick Harper.

►Back-up goalie Max Lacroix has started two games for BU: Saturday’s exhibition vs. Harvard and last season’s exhibition against Simon Fraser. Both went to shootouts with BU coming out on top. Against SFU he yielded just one goal and none in the shootout.

Lacroix, whose late grandfather, Pierre Lacroix, was president and general manager of the Avalanche, added that "The Dog Pound is always so much fun to be around and they're always so loud."

The Champions of Tomorrow

No other school’s 2025 NCAA recruiting class holds a candle to those of Boston University and the University of Michigan. Now that we are down to the final 2, let’s dig deep and determine who comes out on top. Both schools have some excellent freshmen for this upcoming season AND next season, including the potential for some high-class talent coming a year early from the 2026 freshman class. Boston dominates the 2024 class, and for the 2025 class… it’s still Boston.

It seems a little anticlimactic for another team from Boston to have the best recruiting class, but it is the truth. The freshmen for this year are great and will be great this year, and it’s no wonder they have the strongest class again in 2025. BU has been at the forefront of the college world since the pandemic, making the NCAA tournament in 3 of the last 4 years. Those strong classes have carried over and Boston should be a top 2 team for at least the next few years.

►2025 recruit Yegorov earned USHL Goalie of the Week honors after stopping 57 of 58 shots en route to leading Omaha to a pair of wins.

  • Posted a 34-save shutout in Omaha’s 5-0 win vs. Dubuque on Friday.
  • Stopped 23 of 24 shots on Saturday in the Lancers' 4-1 win over Cedar Rapids.
  • Led all USHL goalies who played at least two games during the week with a .983 save percentage and 0.50 goal against average.

►NeutralZone evaluated the top prospects in a recent Muskegon-Chicago USHL contests, including 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence, who leads the Lumberjacks with a 4-4-8 line in nine games.

Tynan Lawrence (F, L, 6’0″, 168, Muskegon Lumberjacks, 08/03/2008, Boston University)

Grade: B+

Comments: Tynan is an average sized centerman who is off to a great start in his rookie USHL season. Already centering the first line and playing meaningful special teams minutes, Tynan ate up a lot of ice time in this game. He did not factor onto the scoresheet, but he led both teams in shots on goal (6) and started overtime while having two long shifts. Tynan was exciting to watch as he quarterbacked the powerplay from the half-wall and then slid down to set up shop for one-time chances at the far dot. He had quite a few sequences where he was able to rip some quick heavy shots from this location, but Cloutier always had an answer. Tynan can motor on his edges and leans into his crossovers with ease. He fights hard along the wall and keeps his feet moving, forcing defenders to use more energy to try and cancel him out. On one occasion he drew a penalty from his hard work. Another shift we watched him sprawl out for a great shot block on a teammate’s giveaway in the high slot; only to get back up, join the counterattack, and rip a wrister from the high slot, blocker side that went out of play. Tynan’s compete level was on full display, and he is showing that he can skate, play physical, and think the game at the USHL level. As an underaged 2008, he will be a prospect to keep an eye on.

Women's Team

Lola Reid earns conference rookie of the week honors for a second time following a three-point weekend in the sweep of Maine. She leads the Terriers with a 3-5-8 scoring line.
