UPDATED: Terriers tie UConn, grab extra point in shootout; Pridham pulls a Skoog; Gianquito named Defender of the Year

Image

#10 Terriers rallied to tie UConn in the third period on Cole Hutson's highlight-reel goal and then gained the extra point by winning the shootout, 2-0, at Toscano Ice Forum in Storrs.

Quinn Hutson and Cole Eiserman connected on their shootout attempts while Mikhail Yegorov defended both shots he faced. The freshman goalie also made a game-saving stop during the three-on-three overtime.

With the win, BU is within two points of second place Maine in the Hockey East standings, although the Black Bears have two games in hand. Terriers can assure themselves of a third-place finish with a win or a tie in either of its final two games. BU is off next weekend, then finishes the regular season with games at home against Providence and on the road at Vermont.

A slashing penalty to Quinn Hutson gave the Huskies an early power play and they converted right off the ensuing draw. Ryan Tattle pulled the puck back to Joey Muldowney for a quick shot that Yegorov fought off, but Jake Richard got to the rebound first and popped it into the cage.

After failing to score on two power plays, the Terriers drew even at 12:20 on a sequence that began with Quinn Hutson taking a hit to get the puck to Ryan Greene in the right corner. The junior co-captain circled to center point and then wired a pass to Sascha Boumedienne who had driven to the left post for the finish past Tyler Muszelik, It was the freshman's second goal in two games.

Four minutes into the third period, UConn regained the lead. After BU put on some pressure on the rush, the Huskies took the puck the other way. From the bottom of the left circle, Kai Janviriya passed to Ethan Gardula at the top of crease and he elevated the puck over Yegorov's shoulder, restoring the home team's one-goal lead.

Matching penalties to Gavin McCarthy and Tattle had the teams skating four-on-four and that's when the Cole Hutson Show took center stage. Devin Kaplan handed the puck off to Hutson at center ice. He skated into the offensive zone, put the puck between his own skates, worked past two defenders by passing to himself and then closed on Muszelik, beating him to the stick side. The freshman blueliner's goal was his 10th. Tom Willander had the second assist.

Both teams had chances to break the tie in the final minutes and Yegorov had to make a left-pad save with two minutes remaining to keep BU even.

During overtime, BU had two grade A chances. The first came when Eiserman's forecheck enabled Cole Hutson to break in alone, but this time Muszelik made the stop. Then, Jack Hughes sped into the offensive zone, but his wrister from between the dots was defended.

With just over a minute left, Yegorov came up huge again, reaching back to pull Tattle's attempt off the goal line.

In the shootout Quinn Hutson converted his attempt while Richard's was stopped by Yegorov. Cole Eiserman followed with a goal and Yegorov turned aside Ethan Whitcomb's shot for a 2-0 win.

Five of Cole Hutson's 10 goals have been scored in February and eight since the early December loss at UMass, when he took responsibility for the team's uneven performance.  With 33 points, he's second among all freshmen in scoring and first among rookie defensemen by a wide margin.

UPDATED: Game Day: Terriers visit UConn; Poll Story; Pridham notches 20th goal

Game day graphic featuring posed photo of Matt Copponi. #8 BU at #9 UConn, Feb. 25, 7 PM in Storrs, CT on ESPN+ and TSN+

#10/8 Terriers begin their final three conference games with a road trip to #9 Connecticut with critical Hockey East points at stake. Puck drop at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs is set for 7 p.m. with ESPN+ providing the live stream.

The teams met at Agganis Arena back in October with BU earning a hard-fought 4-2 win behind a pair of Cole Eiserman goals. Currently, UConn is tied for fourth place with Providence, eight points behind the third-place Terriers, but with a game in hand.

The Huskies had an up and down fall semester putting up an 8-8-1 overall record and 4-6-1 in Hockey East. Since then, UConn is playing its best hockey, producing a 9-2-2 mark with 5-2-1 in the conference including two wins and a tie with #5/4 Maine. They’ve been powered by one of Hockey East’s top lines.

Sophomore forward Joey Muldowney, having a breakout season, is sixth in Hockey East with 33 points and second in goals with 19. Grad student Hudson Schandor, who centers the line, has an 8-23-31 line, while winger Jake Richard, who scored the overtime game-winner against Maine last Friday, has added 10 goals and 18 assists.

Grad student John Spetz, with 155 NCAA games under his belt, anchors a defense that also features freshmen Trey Scott and one-time BU recruit Kai Janviriya.
Most recently, the netminding duties have been split between junior Tyler Muszelik, a transfer from New Hampshire, and freshman Callum Tung. If the rotation continues, it should be Muszelik in goal tonight.

Terriers (18-12-1, 12-8-1) will be looking to break the win-one-lose-one pattern that has produced a 4-3-0 record in February.

Quinn Hutson, BU's top scorer with 38 points, is riding a four-game point streak (2g, 3a) and has notched a point in seven of his last eight games, totaling 12 points (6g, 6a) in that stretch.

Cole Hutson, with a goal and assist in the 3-1 win against Northeastern, has 32 points (9a,23a). He joins his brother Lane Hutson and Alexandre Legault as the only freshmen defensemen in program history to record at least 30 points.

UPDATED Terriers rebound for 3-1 win; Women swept by UConn

Image

#9/8 Terriers earned a hard-fought 3-1 win over Northeastern in what might be BU’s final game at Matthews Arena. Mikahil Yegorov’s sparkling 28-save effort was backed by goals from Tristan Amonte, Cole Hutson and Shane Lachance.

Formerly known as Boston Arena, it was BU’s home rink from the program’s first season, 1917-18 through 1969-70. Saturday’s win gave the Terriers an overall 346-176-19 mark at the rink on Boston’s St. Botolph’s Street.

The win keeps BU in third place in Hockey East, four points behind second place Maine and eight points ahead of UConn and Providence, BU’s next two opponents who each have a game in hand against the Terriers.

“The first adjustment was competing and having effort for 60 minutes,” said head coach Jay Pandolfo who was pleased with his team's performance. “This time of year, on the road, you got to play in tight games. You got to find ways to win them. And tonight, we did that. We weren’t perfect by any means, but we were more competitive, and that’s what we wanted to see.”

BU got on the board at 12:30 on the first when a Northeastern defender lost control of the puck. Matt Copponi pushed it ahead to Jack Hughes in the left circle for a centering pass to Amonte, whose second attempt at the right post slipped past Cameron Whitehead.

Yegorov came up big in the final minute of the opening period, foiling a tip-in attempt by Griffin Erdman.

The Huskies tied the score six minutes into the third period when Joaquim Lemay weaved his way into the slot and whipped a shot past Yegorov’s stick side.

BU needed just two minutes to regain the lead. Kamil Bednarik got the puck to Quinn Hutson for a shot from the left faceoff dot that was blocked. Cole Hutson got to the loose puck and immediately fired it on goal and, thanks to Lachance’s screen, Whitehead never saw the puck until it went past him on the blocker side.

A questionable at best hooking call on Brandon Svoboda gave the Huskies a chance to draw even again, but four stops by Yegorov kept BU on top. Northeastern peppered him with 13 shots in the final period.

A penalty to Dylan Hryckowian with 1:49 left put BU on a power play and after Whitehead was pulled for an extra skater, Lachance found the empty net to put an exclamation on the win.

A post-game dust-up resulted in a game disqualification for NU’s Christophe Tellier and a game misconduct for Huskies coach Jerry Keefe.

With his goal and assist, Cole Hutson has 32 points and joins his brother Lane Hutson as the only two BU freshman defensemen to exceed 30 points. (H/T to BU Hockey Stats).

Game Day: Men's and Women's Team look to rebound vs Huskies (NU & UConn)

Huskies thump Terriers, 5-1

Image

#9/8 Terriers added to their season-long series of Friday night flops, dropping a 5-1 decision to Northeastern. Of BU's 12 losses, eight have come on Fridays.

Quinn Hutson’s 18th goal in the second period was BU’s only tally.

The Huskies who came into the game with a less than 10% power play, scored on both of their man-advantages. Their five goals came on just 20 shots.

"It's very difficult to coach effort, and you shouldn't have to," a clearly unhappy Jay Pandolfo said, post-game. "These guys should have enough pride to, like, go out and work. You're not always going to be at your best, I get that...but just take pride in working."

“Poor Yegorov,” Pandolfo said. “He was probably like, ‘What’s going on in front of me?’”

In the second period, the freshman goalie stopped a penalty shot by NU's Dylan Hryckowian.

More from Pandolfo in the post-game link below.

For BU fans, the highlight of the evening came before the first puck drop as Bernie Corbett was honored for his 40 seasons as the Voice of BU Hockey.

Fourth Liner's Terrier Takeaway

- The high point of the night was a fantastic pre-game tribute to Bernie Corbett, the longstanding voice of BU hockey.  Bernie is synonymous with BU hockey – and there is no better ambassador, historian, supporter and representative of the program.  Forty amazing years for him behind the microphone and, hopefully, many more to come.  Congratulations, Bernie – and thank you for all that you do for the team and Terrier fans!

- In terms of the game, there are, unfortunately, not many positives to report.  BU’s Friday night struggles and inconsistent play reared their heads again.

- Credit to Northeastern which did a good job of stacking players at the defensive blue line, getting sticks in the passing lane and taking away the front of their net.  BU tried too many times to skate through the wall of players at the offensive blue line which created turnovers and led to frustration for the team (and fans).

- For most of the first two periods, the Terriers also just didn’t seem willing to give the necessary effort to win.  Not enough players getting to the net, not enough willingness to get pucks deep or win puck battles, and inconsistent puck management.  Too many Northeastern players left alone in the slot for Grade A chances.

- On a positive note, the Terriers did seem to show more urgency and effort in the third period, in spite of being down by multiple goals.

- The team knows what it needs to do to win and play the right way (see the Beanpot final and last Saturday night against Providence for evidence) but just seems to lack the will or desire to do this on a consistent basis.

- So, once again, Terrier fans wait to see if our team can muster the resilience that it has shown all year tomorrow night at Matthews. And we continue to hold out hope that they will eventually find the effort and consistency needed to make a strong run in the Hockey East and NCAA playoffs.

UPDATED: Game Day:Terriers host Northeastern; Corbett to be honored; Women look to clinch conference title

Game day graphic featuring posed photo of Jack Hughes. #8 BU vs. Northeastern, Feb. 21, 7 PM at Agganis Arena on ESPN+

With just five games left on the regular-season schedule, #9/8 Terriers begin a home-and-home series with crosstown rival Northeastern. Puck drop tonight at Agganis Arena is at 7 p.m. with ESPN+ providing the live stream. There will be a Rivalry Rally Towel Giveaway.

BU is currently in third place in Hockey East, six points behind co-leaders BC and Maine and six ahead of Lowell, with Merrimack, UConn and Providence right behind.

After winning its first four conference games of 2025, BU is 2-4-0 in the last six, so the six Hockey East points at stake this weekend are critically important.

Terrier head coach Jay Pandolfo reported that freshman Alex Zetterberg, who missed last weekend’s games with health issues, will return to the lineup. He expects all Terriers will be available.

Noting that the team's goals against per game has dropped by more than one (3.5 to 2.4) in the second half over the first, Pandolfo explained, "Our D zone has been much better….there’s been times where we’ve probably let too many chances in the slot and Yegorov has been there for us. A lot of those plays have been off mistakes, turnovers, stuff like that, rather than our D zone structures. Overall, I like where our team defense has been in the second half."

Quinn Hutson is fourth in Hockey East in points with 36 and has a 12-10-22 line is his last 14 games. Over the same period, Cole Hutson, who has been playing his best hockey, has 19 points (6G, 13A).

BU is 6-6-2 against the Huskies in their last 14 meetings. Last season the teams split four games with three going to overtime.

Currently, Northeastern sits in 10th place in the conference. After a strong start to second semester with four wins in five games—including victories over Quinnipiac and UMassthe Huskies have dropped five of the last six.

Their top scorers are familiar names to Terrier fans. Junior Jack Williams leads in goals (14) and points (31). Classmate Cam Lund has 27 points (11G,16A), while sophomore Dylan Hryckowian follows with 25 (13G,12A).  Junior Vinny Borgesi (5-15-20) anchors the defense.

Soph Cameron Whitehead had been in goal for the vast majority of games with a 2.90 GAA and a .905 save percentage.  Freshman Quentin Sigurdson picked up his first win a week ago, a 2-0 shutout of Lowell earning Hockey East Goaltender of the Week honors.

On this week's edition of Inside BU Hockey, Bernie Corbett interviews head coach Jay Pandolfo, head coach Tara Watchorn and graduate student Lindsay Bochna.

► BU Hockey Writer Scott Weighart examines the Terriers’ marked improvement in team defense since the calendar turned. After allowing 3.5 goals per game through December, BU cut that number by more than a goal per game to 2.4. In the last 12 games, the Terriers have yielded 29 goals, including four empty-net tallies with three in the home-and-home against BC.

From The Athletic: Islanders NCAA Prospects

Kamil Bednarik, C, Boston University (No. 61, 2024)
Eiserman and Bednarik played together for two years at the U.S. National Team Development Program, where they both committed to Boston U. Lamoriello’s Islanders then picked them in consecutive rounds in June. “Can’t get away from each other,” Eiserman said with a laugh about his suitemate in Boston.

But the two forwards couldn’t be more different on the ice. Eiserman is a no-conscience goal scorer who celebrates as if he got shot out of a cannon. Bednarik is a defense-first center whom Pandolfo, the BU coach, already relies on for penalty killing and late-game, lead-preserving minutes. Bednarik has a goal and 14 assists in 29 games as a freshman on a team that’s been consistently ranked in the top 10 this season, but his stats aren’t what has mattered so far.

“He’s the type of player who can help you win championships,” Pandolfo said of Bednarik. “He’s got plenty of offense in his game, too, but he’s going to be a player that any coach will feel confident calling on in big situations. He’s probably underrated offensively, but he’s playing a certain role for us now. An intelligent player, a winner. Every coach wants that.”

Where Eiserman says Alex Ovechkin is his idol, Bednarik has a different view of his ideal NHL player.

“I always watched Patrice Bergeron a lot,” Bednarik said. “Everybody’s always trying to score in youth hockey and no one’s really thinking about defending, the other things. I always liked the idea of stealing the puck off someone to go down and score, or keeping the other team from scoring. It’s a real challenge.”

BU had three games against top-ranked Boston College in the last month and it was Bednarik’s line that saw plenty of time opposite BC’s top two lines, which feature a handful of first-round picks.

Bednarik will get his chances to shine in the years to come — he’s still 18 so the only things in his near future are a return to BU and a chance to play some minutes at the 2026 World Juniors for the U.S. squad. But, a lot like his college coach, Bednarik has the qualities that Lamoriello and his amateur staff look for in a future NHL glue guy.

Looking ahead

2026 recruit Rian Chudzinski scored his 18th goal in #2-ranked Dexter-Southfield’s 3-1 loss to St. Paul’s. He has 40 points in 21 games for, the top-ranked New England Prep school. Carter Meyer, a freshman at Rivers, leads all prep scorers with 37-26-63 in 24 games. He’s the son of Terrier All-American and NHLer Freddy Meyer

Prospect Watch interviewed 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence, who revealed his NHL role models and discussed his decisions to play in the USHL and to commit to BU. Lawrence, who has a 5-star ranking from Puck Preps, is the leading goal scorer and second in points for Muskegon as a 16 year old with an 18-20-38 line in 40 games.
