For All The Beans and #300, too.

As if tonight's game--the Beanpot championship, a rematch between last year's finalists and the schools with the most Beanpot wins--didn't already have enough cache, it's the 300th meeting between the Commonwealth Avenue rivals who first met at Boston Arena in 1918.

Tonight's final, set for 7:30 p.m. at TD Garden, will air on both NESN and the NHL Network with a live stream from ESPN+.  Hall of Fame coaches Jack Parker and Jerry York will combine for a ceremonial puck drop for the milestone meeting.

Ten days after their last meeting, a 4-1 Eagles win, BU and BC will face off in the 73rd Beanpot Tournament championship game. The Terriers will seek to repeat the title they won last season by beating their Green Line rivals 4-1. BC is looking for its first tournament win in a decade. Their last title game win in 2016 was against BU, a 1-0 overtime victory.

The Terriers, who have reached the championship game in 58 of 73 tournaments and winning a record 32 times, are looking to repeat for the first time since they won three in a row, 2005-2007. 

BU leads the series with BC, 141-137-21 (.507) and also has a 31-17 (.646) in Beanpot games. 

In Friday's win against Maine, two Terriers ended goal scoring droughts. Cole Eiserman netted his first goal in five games, while Ryder Ritchie, who tallied the game-winner in overtime, hadn't scored since early November. Both are hoping to keep the scoring touch going against BC.

Ritchie spoke about the Beanpot final at Friday's post-game press conference: "It's an honor. Just all the players that have played in the past, how many people show up for it—it's a huge thing for Boston, so it was an awesome atmosphere. Can't wait for Monday."

Charlie Trethewey missed Friday's game due to a death in his family. Coach Jay Pandolfo said the freshman would be back in Boston for Sunday's practice. 

The #11/13 Eagles followed up their win at Agganis with a 5-1 victory over Harvard last Monday, but fell back to earth on Friday with a 6-1 home ice loss to Vermont. Since the calendar turned to 2026, BC has won four of seven, including a sweep of New Hampshire.

Once again BU fans nationwide will be gathering at Beanpot Watch Parties to cheer on the Terriers. More than 20 locations from Boston to San Francisco have events scheduled. The link has an interactive map of those sites where you can reserve a spot to join the festivities.

►►NHL.com has posted new entry in Tynan Lawrence's Draft Diary. The freshman center addresses his first month as a Terrier and his initial Beanpot experience.

So, I've been at Boston University for almost a month and it's been great. I think the college game is just a faster game. You're playing against guys who are quite a bit older and stronger but one of the main differences is your time and space. In the USHL, you have 3-4 seconds to make a play. In college, you have 1-2 seconds. The hockey is a lot faster, but I think once you get adjusted to it, it becomes easier.

I experienced my first Beanpot game on Monday, a 3-2 shootout win against Northeastern. It was definitely a cool experience, a great atmosphere at TD Garden in Boston. It's a great building to play in, especially with all the teams that play there and I'm looking forward to the Beanpot final against Boston College on Monday.

 

Winter Olympics 

►►Charlie McAvoy, who will serve as an alternate captain for Team USA, is writing an Olympic diary for The Athletic (subscription). Here’s an excerpt:    

It’s been a blast so far in Milan, and I’m so glad I came early.

Landed a few days ago and me and Zach Werenski, Jake Oettinger and Sway (Jeremy Swayman) got fitted with our Ralph Lauren outfits and then got to be part of the opening ceremony.

For me, it felt like once in a lifetime, to be there and walk and see thousands of people cheering us on and be with the other athletes and everybody from Team USA. It truly was one of the most special things I’ve been a part of.

And once you get to meet so many different athletes, you want to go to events and root them on. So we went last night to the figure skating, and it was incredible.

The village is really cool. It honestly feels like being back in college again, really, you know, it’s dorm rooms, it’s small, there’s a dining hall, some rec spaces, athletes everywhere. So that’s kind of like your students. And it’s always busy. Everybody’s just coming and going, everybody’s on their own schedule. So, it just feels like I’m back at BU a little bit.

Canada at Olympics | NHL ... 

At Team Canada's first practice session, Macklin Celebrini skated on the top line with Connor McDavid and Tom Wilson. "It's fun. It's great," Celebrini said after the practice at Santagiulia Arena. "I think we've got to get a little chemistry, but it is super cool."

Looking ahead

2027 recruit Brady Knowling stopped 15 of 17 shots in the NTDP U18s’ 3-2 overtime win Switzerland at the Five Nations tournament. It was the second tournament win and eighth in his last ten starts for the top-ranked North American goalie for the 2026 draft.  In Sunday's 4-1 win over Finland, 2027 recruit Carter Meyer scored a goal and added an assist.

2026 recruit Viktor Nörringer scored his 16th goal in Muskegon’s 4-2 loss to Chicago. He has eight goals in the last seven games. A fourth-round pick by Nashville in 2024, Norringer has 31 points in 33 games for the Lumberjacks.

2027 or 2028 recruit Andrei Nikolaev stopped all 32 shots to shut out Omaha for a 4-0 Des Moines win. He has a 1.98 GAA in five games since being acquired by the Buccaneers from the NAHL TItans. 

Looking back

AHL quinn hutson 

Quinn Hutson is headed to the AHL All-Star Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday. With 43 points in 41 games, he's sixth in the AHL in points and first among rookies. Quinn has a had two call-ups to Edmonton and scored his first NHL goal on December 18 at TD Garden against the Bruins.

This past Friday was the 48th anniversary of the 1978 Blizzard Beanpot when BU beat BC 12-5 in the late game of the opening round as snow brought the city to a standstill. The championship game was postponed until March 1 with the Terriers pounding Harvard 7-1. BU would go one to win its third national championship beating the Eagles, 5-3, in Providence.
