Rankings and honors

Sophomore Danny O’Regan earned Hockey East’s co-player of the week recognition for his two-goal effort that help lift BU past Providence Friday night. He added an assist the next night. Terriers making the weekly top performers list: Robbie Baillargeon, Matt O’Connor, and Ahti Oksanen, who, with a goal and an assist against the Friars, remains the top-scoring Divison 1 defenseman with nine points.

BU moved a notch in the USCHO poll from 18 to 17. Next up is a home contest with #8 BC.

Looking ahead

2014 recruits Jack Eichel and Johnathan MacLeod are headed to Finland with the NTDP U18s for the Four Nations’ Tournament. Team USA takes on the hosts on Wednesday in the tournament opener.

The U17s, with 2015 recruit Charlie McAvoy, also are headed across the pond and will play in a Four Nations’ Tournament in Slovakia, beginning with an exhibition game against the hosts on Wednesday.

Women’s Team

BU's trio of wins against, Northestern, New Hampshire and Vermont brought BU a bundle of recognition. Hockey East named BU its team of the week, while captain Louis Warren (5 goals,1 assist) earned co-player of the week honors. Kerrin Sperry, followed her October Goalie of the Month selection by picking up goalie of the week recognition (0.98 GAA,  965 save %). Top performers were Sarah Lefort, Kayla Tutino and Maddie Elia.

Sperry’s .954 save % is second best in Division 1, while Warren is tied for fourth in goals per game (0.88).

The 6-1-1 Terriers moved back into the USCHO poll’s top ten, with a #10 ranking.

Friars post 3-1 win over BU

Providence gained a split in the weekend series, defeating BU 3-1 Saturday night, dealing BU its first conference loss. Despite Friday night’s comeback win, the third period continues to be a problem for BU. For the third time in ten days, the Terriers have allowed strong goaltending in an away game to be wasted by yielding the game-winner in the final period.

Terriers scored the game’s first goal on a power play at 15:08 of the middle period when Ahti Oksanen took pass from Nick Roberto at the top of the circle and rifled a shot past Jon Gillies. Danny O’Regan also assisted. Just under three minutes later, the Friars evened the score on a 5-on-3 power play with Derek Army converting after Sean Maguire made the initial stop.

Providence took the lead at 3:28 of the third when Ross Mauermann muscled past the BU defense and scored in close. Terriers were unable to put an equalizer past Gillies and Mauermann closed the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Maguire’s 33 saves earned him third-star honors.

Terriers are now 2-1-0 in the conference and 4-4-0 overall.

Looking back

Former BU assistant captain Justin Courtnall scored his first goal of the season for AHL Hamilton, but the Bulldogs fell to Abbottsford, 3-2.

 

Women’s Team

Terriers recorded their first shutout of the season, blanking Vermont, 6-0, behind 28 saves from senior goalie and the game’s first star, Kerrin Sperry. BU had a 2-0 lead entering the third period and added four more scores, including two goals in the first five minutes by senior captain Louise Warren, who leads the team in scoring (7-2-9).

Three Terriers scored their first goals of the season—Dakota Woodworth (1^st period), Sarah Bayersdorfer (2^nd) and Diana Bennett (3^rd). Kayla Tutino also tallied a third-period goal.

The win moves BU’s record to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Hockey East play. Next up is a Wednesday night home tilt vs. Connecticut.

Turnaround Terriers overcome Providence, 4-3

 
Terriers saved their best for last—more specifically the final two periods—as they roared back from a 3-0 deficit to beat #3 Providence, 4-3, at Agganis Arena. Sophomore Danny O’Regan (photo) scored twice, while classmates Matt Lane and Sam Kurker each added a goal.

The opening period was all Providence, as the Friars poured 19 shots on Matt O’Connor. The visitors opened the scored midway through the period on Steven Shamanski’s shorthander. Ross Mauermann’s one-timer doubled the lead and late in the period Brandon Tanev scored on a backhander after a BU turnover. For the Terriers it was the worst period of the season.

It was a totally different BU team after the first intermission. Six minutes into the period, Kurker converted a Nick Roberto rebound after Lane slid the puck into the crease.  Three minutes later, on a power play, Lane beat Jon Gillies high to the glove side from a sharp angle after a pass from Ahti Oksanen.

BU knotted the score late in the period when O’Regan completed a give-and-go with Robbie Baillargeon. Matt Grzelcyk added an assist.  At 5:38 of the final period, O’Regan grabbed the rebound of Baillargeon’s shot and flipped it past Gillies, with co-captain Patrick MacGregor also assisting.

O’Connor kept the Friars off the board the rest of the way, stopping all 18 shots he faced in the final two periods  and 34 of 37 for the evening to improve his record to 3-1-0.

After the game, BU Coach David Quinn explained:

“The first period, they were playing at a level we weren’t able to match and coming out for the second period, we decided the match their effort and their tempo and we were able to do it.

“It’s not easy when you’re down 3-0 and you get your lunch handed to you the way we did in the first period. To respond the way we did certainly speaks a lot to our character and will and leadership.”

 Terriers drew to penalties in game’s first three minutes but stayed out of the box the rest of the way. 

►BU and Providence meet again tonight at the newly refurbished Schneider Arena. Game time is 8 p.m.

Looking back

Wade Megan scored twice—his 3^rd and 4^th goals of the season—and added an assist for ECHL Cincinnati as the Cyclones shut out Evansville, 7-0.

John Curry stopped 34 shots and another 4 of 5 in a shootout as Orlando edged Florida, 3-2.

Women’s team

Terriers’ captain Louise Warren broke a 1-1 tie with five-and-a-half minutes left in regulation and added an empty-netter as BU beat New Hampshire, 3-1 in Durham. With the win BU moved to 2-0 in Hockey East and 5-1-1 overall. 

After the Wildcats opened the scoring in the first period, sophomore Sarah Lefort’s fifth goal of the season brought BU event midway through the second period. Warren’s game-winner was assisted by freshmen Maddie Elia and Sarah Steele. Senior goalie Kerrin Sperry finished with 22 saves to lower her GAA to 1.62. BU returns home tonight to take on Vermont.

Game Day: BU vs. Providence at Agganis

Terriers return to conference play with a home-and-home pair against #3 Providence, beginning with tonight’s game at Agganis Arena. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. The Friars are unbeaten in five starts, with a tie against Miami the only blemish on their record.

Providence is led by last year’s Rookie of the Year, goalie Jon Gillies, who currently leads the conference with a .950 save percentage and forwards Ross Mauermann and Mark Jankowski.

BU Coach David Quinn, looking to generate more offense, has adjusted his line-up, which according to the Daily Free Press will look like this:

Women’s Team

Terriers are on the road tonight in New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center. BU won its Hockey East opener on Tuesday, beating Northeastern, and will look to continue its winning streak in the conference tonight in Durham and at home tomorrow against Vermont.

UNH is the last team to beat BU in a conference game, a 4-2 Terrier defeat last Nov. 9.

Senior goalie Kerrin Sperry was named Hockey East Goalie of the Month for October after posting a 1.70 GAA and a .946 save percentage to go along with a 4-0-1 record.  Sarah Lefort, Louise Warren and Samantha Sutherland lead BU with five points each.
