UPDATED Six headed to WJSS rosters

Six Terriers have been named to rosters for the World Junior Summer Showcase set for July 26-August 3 in Plymouth, Michigan. Rising sophomore Tom Willander is rostered for Sweden, while classmate Gavin McCarthy joins four incoming freshmen--Kamil Bednarik, Cole Eiserman, Cole Hutson and Brandon Svoboda--on the Team USA Squad.

► Another incoming freshman, defenseman Sascha Boumedienne, has been selected for Sweden's roster in this summer's Hlinka-Gretzky Tournament.

15 members of the 2023-24 Terriers, including seven freshmen, have been named to the Hockey East All-Academic team, matching the record number from the previous season. Three—Cade Webber, Sam Stevens and Henry Graham— received Distinguished Scholar recognition after making the All-Academic team for four seasons.

NHL.com Senior Draft Writer Mike Morreale profiled 2024 recruit Kamil Bednarik ahead of this month’s Entry Draft. A 6’0” left-shot center, Bednarik had 65 points for the NTDP U18s last season and frequently was paired with fellow recruit Cole Eiserman.

"I like his progression," David Gregory of Central Scouting said. "I like how he's impacting the game more significantly all the time. The best players are always going to have some kind of impact, and you can't not see him when you watch that team. I've seen his game grow in the defensive end, too, and for a centerman, that's a good thing."

Looking back

Former Terrier netminder and Providence College Women’s Head Coach Bob Deraney has been named Head Coach of the ECHL Worcester Railers. Deraney played for BU from 1983 to 1987, with a 3.63 GAA and a 21-12-4 record. He led the Lady Friars from 1999 to 2018 and was an assistant with the Railers last season.

Freshman forward Alex Law, who also plays for the Terrier lacrosse team, has been named to Team Canada’s lacrosse squad for the World U20 Championships.

 

Coaching Moves; Women name captains

Coaching Moves

Former Terrier head coach David Quinn has joined Mike Sullivan's staff in Pittsburgh. Quinn, who was BU associate head coach on the 2009 national champions and head coach for the 2015 national finalists, previously had NHL head coaching stints with the Rangers and Sharks. He and Sullivan overlapped as Terriers for two seasons (86-87, 87-88). Quinn was a non-playing captain in 87-88, while Sullivan captained the 89-90 squad to the Frozen Four.

The Boston Bruins have promoted former Terrier standout forward Joe Sacco to associate head coach. Sacco has been a Bruins assistant since 2014. Prior to that, he served as Colorado Avalanche head coach for four seasons, 2009-2013. Sacco also was a teammate of both Quinn and Sullivan and played on the 1990 national semifinalist team.

San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier has named Ryan Warsofsky as their new head coach. He is the brother former BU and NHL defenseman David Warsofsky and previously was the team's assistant coach under Quinn.

Former Terrier head coach Albie O'Connell has left his position as assistant at Arizona State after one season. Reports indicate he is pursuing a position with an NHL team.

Coach Tara Watchorn announced a four member leadership group for the 2024-25 season. Fifth-year defenseman Tara Giaquinto will wear the C while the assistant captains will be Maggie Hanzel, Callie Shanahan and Julia Shaunessey, who also is a fifth-year defenseman.

E-Rod takes center stage in Cup finals; Friendship Four pairings; draft diaries and profile

 

Someone at NHL.com made an extremely prescient choice when they asked former Terrier standout and current Florida Panther Evan Rodrigues to author a Stanley Cup Final Blog during the series between Edmonton and Florida.

After scoring 39 points in 80 regular season games, E-Rod has 11 points in 19 Stanley Cup games including three tallies in the first two games of the finals. His first of two goals in the third period on Monday was the game-winner in a 4-1 victory.

 An assistant captain on the Terriers NCAA championship finalist squad in 2014-15, he was second in the nation in points with 61 (21G,40A) behind linemate Jack Eichel. Over four seasons at BU, he totaled 42 goals and 79 assists and twice was a Hockey East All-Star.

Rodrigues is seeking to become the 12^th Terrier with his name on the Stanley Cup. Eichel won with Vegas last season, Kevin Shattenkirk won with Tampa Bay in 2020 and Alex Chiasson won with Washington in 2018.

 ►Both 2024 Hobey Baker Award winner Macklin Celebrini and 2024 recruit Cole Eiserman have each posted another edition of their Draft Diaries for NHL.com. Each detailed his experiences at last week’s NHL Combine in Buffalo.

At the Combine, both Celebrini and Eiserman—high-scoring linemates as 15 year olds at Shattuck St. Mary’s—was measured at 5’11.75” and 197 lbs.

►First-round pairings have been announced for next season’s Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast. BU will face Merrimack on Nov. 29, while Harvard takes on Notre Dame.

·         Mikhail Yegorov was another player that I heard interviewed well and he was a favorite among the media, too. The Russian netminder who played for the Omaha Lancers last season in the USHL had tremendous insight on his mental approach and how his mother was a big resource for him on handling what was a tough season statistically for the big netminder.

For a third consecutive season, former BU standout Bobo Carpenter and the Florida Everblades claimed the ECHL Kelly Cup Championship. Carpenter, a member of the Terriers’ 2017-18 Hockey East Champions and co-captain in 2018-19, scored 46 points in the regular season and added 23 more in 23 playoff games.

Minnesota Wild head coach John Hynes has been named as an assistant for the 2025 U.S. National Team that will in next February’s Four Nation’s Face-Off in Montreal and Boston. The U.S. squad, under head coach Mike Sullivan, will compete against Canada, Swede and Finland.

Hynes, a member of BU’s 1995 National Champions, served as head coach for the U.S. National Team in last month’s IIHF World Championship. Prior to the Wild, he was head coach for the Devils and for the Predators.

Report: Blue-chip D recruit to accelerate; full schedule announced

                           

Hockey journalist Mark Divver posted that Swedish defenseman Sascha Boumedienne will now head to Comm Ave. for the 2024-25 season, one year earlier than previously expected. The 6-2 left-shot defenseman, who committed to BU committed to BU last Winter after being tendered by the USHL Youngtown Phantoms. He earned All-Rookie honors after producing a 3-24-27 scoring line in 49 games with .55 points/game--tops for USHL first-year defensemen.

Boumedienne represented Sweden in last season's World U17 Hockey Challenge, earning a bronze medal, and wore the Tre Kroner in 25 international games over the past two seasons. Before his USHL season, he starred in the Ohio Blue Jackets organization.

Boumedienne is the son of former NHLer Josef Boumedienne who is an assistant coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He turned 17 last January and will be eligible for the 2025 NHL Draft.

With the blueliner's acceleration, BU would have eight defensemen on the 2024-25 roster: holdovers Tom Willander, Gavin McCarthy, Aidan Celebrini, Mick Frechette and Jack Page, transfer Brehdan Engum, and freshmen Cole Hutson and Boumedienne. 

►An NHL.com story on the NHL Combine (this week in Buffalo) features Macklin Celebrini's meeting with the San Jose Sharks who hold the overall first pick in this month's Entry Draft. It also covers Jack Pridham's experiences at prior NHL drafts, as a runner assisting his father, Toronto assistant GM, Brandon Pridham. The right wing, who earned BCHL All-Rookie honor after putting up 49 points, revealed that he'll play a second season with West Kelowna and be part of BU's 2025 recruit class. 

"I think another year of development (with West Kelowna) will be good," he said. "I have to continue to get stronger. Another year of juniors is only going to help get me ready for the next level."

Terriers' full 2024-25 schedule--34 regular-season games and two exhibition games--has been announced and posted on the Go.Terriers.com web site. BU opens the season with two non-conference home games, Oct. 5 vs. Holy Cross and Oct. 12 vs. Union, followed by the Hockey East opener against UConn, at home on Oct. 18. 

The out-of-conference schedule also includes a pair of road games against North Dakota, two at home with Michigan, a late December return to New Haven to play Yale and the Beanpot Tournament with a first-round match-up against Harvard.

Terriers will play a pair at Maine for the first time since 2021-22 and will meet Providence and Vermont three times.
