US to face Canada for Gold; Eiserman ties goals mark

Cole Eiserman scored twice and Cole Hutson scored a goal and an assist in Team USA's 7-2 win against Slovakia in the semifinals of the IIHF World U18 Championships in Finland. On Sunday, they'll face Canada who held on to beat Sweden, 5-4, in the other semifinal. The game will air live on NHL Network at 11 a.m. ET.

With his two tallies--both coming on power plays--Eiserman has tied Cole Caufield for the career NTDP record of 126 goals. After scoring 69 times as a U17, he has 57 this season. Those are the second and third best single-season marks in the NTDP.  The two goals also move Eiserman into second place for career points with 192. He has eight goals in the tournament and two assists.

Hutson, who broke the career points record for a program defenseman earlier in the week, now has 116. For the tournament, he is the highest scoring defenseman with 10 points (3G,7A). Hutson, who was named one of Team USA's top three players for the tournament, now has 116 career points.

Alexander Zetterberg, who had five points for Sweden, was named one his team's top three players for the tournament despite missing Sweden's two medal-round games with an injury.

Hutson ties NTDP career points record

IIHF World U18 Championships in Finland.

For the second time in the tournament, Cole Hutson gave Team USA an early lead, this time in a 7-1 win over Latvia that boosted the U.S.’s record to 3-0 in the preliminary round. He also assisted on a goal, raising his career point total to 111, tied for the all-time program record with J.D. Forrest.

Cole Eiserman also contributed a goal and an assist on Hagens goal. He leads all skaters with six goals and is second in points with eight. Hutson is the top scoring defenseman with five points and is tied with Alexander Zetterberg for 10th in scoring. Both have a 2-3-5 line. Kamil Bednarik has a goal and two assists.

Team USA completes the preliminary round with its toughest opponent thus far, Finland, on Tuesday in an 11 a.m. ET start. It airs on USA Network.

Zetterberg had the primary assist on Sweden’s tying goal against Czechia, but Sweden ended up losing in a shootout, 3-2.

Looking ahead

2024 recruit Brandon Svoboda scored his first post-season goal to provide the game-winner as Fargo defeated Sioux City, 3-1.

In game three of the Vegas-Dallas series, Jack Eichel scored a shorthanded goal to tie the score at 2-2, but the Stars came away with a 3-2 overtime win thanks to 32 saves by Jake Oettinger.

Eichel scored again in game four, but again, Dallas came up on top with a 4-2 win that evened the series at 2-2. Oettinger had 32 saves, including all 14 shots he faced in the third period. 

Charlie Coyle and Charlie McAvoy assisted on Brad Marchand’s game-winner in the Bruins’s 3-1 win against Toronto. Boston leads the series, 3-1.

Evan Rodrigues scored his first playoff goal as Florida routed Tampa Bay, 6-1, to clinch the first-round series.
