Power play goals lead Maine past BU
In the Hockey East semifinal, Maine’s power play produced four goals, including the final two—one an empty-netter—as the Black Bears defeated BU, 5-3. The Terriers had tied the score at three apiece early in the third period on Matt Nieto’s (photo) second goal of the game. But Maine took the lead for good three minutes later on Mark Antoine’s power play goal and, with BU pressing for an equalizer, an empty-netter sealed the outcome.
BU dominated the scoring chances early in the game and took a 1-0 lead on Alex Chiasson’s 15th goal, but several grade-A chances to extend the lead were turned aside. Maine evened the score at 1-1 less than a minute into the second period when Ross Gaudet accidentally pushed Kieran Millan into the goal after he’d controlled the puck, Nieto gave BU the lead when he converted a pass from Sahir Gill, but Maine took control with Will O’Neill scoring twice in the final ten minutes of the period.
Maine outshot BU 44-31 and scored on f four of six power plays, while the Terriers scored on one of two man-advantages.
