Terriers blank UConn, 2-0

Behind 26 saves from Jake Oettinger and third-period goals from Ty Amonte and Joel Farabee, the Terriers snapped their losing streak with a 2-0 blanking of UConn. The win kept BU tied for seventh in Hockey East with Maine. For the junior netminder from Minnesota, it was his 11^th career shutout and his 100^th game as a Terrier. He trails only All-Americans Jack Ferreira and John Curry who each had 13 shutouts.

BU enjoyed a strong opening period, pouring 14 shots on Tomas Vomacka, who turned them all aside, including two gems off the stick of Patrick Curry. The Huskies had the upper hand in the middle stanza with an 8-2 shot advantage, but neither team was able to break the scoreless tie.

BU finally got on the board early in the third when Ryan Cloonan pried the puck loose from a corner jam. The puck slid to the left circle where Amonte passed to Cam Crotty charging through the right circle. Vomacka stopped Crotty’s shot, but Amonte cleaned up the rebound for a 1-0 Terrier lead.

With BU clinging to the lead, Oettinger stopped a pair of UConn breakaways, one by Alexander Payusov, who had scored the overtime winner on Friday. An Amonte penalty at 13:43 put the Huskies on their third power play. Cloonan broke up a rush and Kasper Kotkansalo head-manned the puck to Farabee who broke in alone and beat Vomacka high to the blocker side for a 2-0 lead.

“It was important to bounce back,” said head coach Albie O’Connell. “Guys were committed to doing the right thing and playing the right way. There was a lot of buy-in, so that’s a positive sign for sure.”

2019 recruit Dom Fensore scored his fourth goal in the NTDP U18s’ 7-2 win against Chicago.  Case McCarthy had an assist for Team USA and Robert Mastrosimone had a helper for the Steel.

Charlie McAvoy’s third goal of the season was the game-winner in the Bruins’ 4-2 win against the Kings.

Women’s Team

#7 Terriers had to settle for a 3-3 tie with New Hampshire when the Wildcats scored an extra-attacker goal in the final minute of regulation. With the tie at Agganis Arena, BU clinched home ice for the upcoming Hockey East playoffs and can finish no worse than in fourth place.

 

BU would take the lead three times---on Breanna Scarpacci’s goal in the first period, Sammy Davis’s in the second and Jesse Compher’s late in the third—but each time UNH’s Taylor Wenczkowski matched the tally as she recorded a hat trick. Kate Stuart made 41 saves in goal for BU.
