UPDATED Game Day: BU visits New Hampshire

#1/2-ranked Terriers (1-0-0) kick off their Hockey East schedule with a road game against New Hampshire, who will be playing their season opener. Puck drop is at 8 PM for the contest that will air on NESN and live stream on ESPN+ outside of New England.

BU enters Hockey East’s 40th season as the defending regular-season and tournament champion, the program’s seventh “double."

Last Saturday BU edged Bentley in overtime, 3-2, on a Lane Hutson goal while the Wildcats dropped a 3-2 decision to Maine in an exhibition game played at Jack Kelley RInk at Colby College.

Tonight's game will be played at the newly slimmed-down Whittemore Center; over the summer, the prior 200 x 100 ice surface was reduced to 200 x 90, same as Agganis Arena’s dimensions.

In his media call Thursday, Coach Jay Pandolfo indicated he’ll largely stay with the same forward lines as last week, which included the top line of Macklin Celebrini centering Quinn Hutson and Jeremy Wilmer. Celebrini scored his first college goal on a two-on-one with Quinn and in overtime he assisted on Lane’s GWG.

Pandolfo reported that freshman Tom Willander, the 11th overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver, will make his debut tonight, but had yet to decide who he would pair with. BU will skate seven defensemen.

He added that in this week’s practice the team focused on playing faster and having better breakouts from the defensive zone and improved entries on power plays.

“They made it really hard on us, and getting exposed to that kind of atmosphere early is important,” BU alternate captain Sam Stevens told the Boston Hockey Blog Thursday. “Every game is gonna be a dogfight, and I think we know what to expect now.”

Junior transfer Matthieu Caron stopped 21 shots in his Terrier debut and was chosen as player of the game by his teammates.

BU’s top five returning scorers are all sophomores: Lane Hutson (48 points), Ryan Greene and Jeremy Wilmer (31 each), Quinn Hutson (28) and Devin Kaplan (23). The Hutson brothers each had 15 goals and Kaplan 10.

UNH is led by 24-point scorer Liam Devlin, Cy LeClerc who had 13 goals and Colton Huard with 16 assists. NTDP alum Tyler Muszelik returns in goal after posting a 3.24 GAA as a freshman.

BU swept a pair from New Hampshire last season at Agganis Arena, 6-3 and 3-0.

Tonight's Terrier lineup:

Lachance-Greene-Q. Hutson

Wilmer-M. Celebrini-Kaplan

Harvey-Stevens-Amonte

Hutson-C. McCarthy

Webber-Gallagher

Looking back

Joel Farabee became the first of the 17 Terriers in the NHL to score a goal this season, opening the scoring in the Flyers’ 4-2 win against Columbus.

Jake Oettinger earned first-star honors for backstopping Dallas’ 2-1 shootout win against St. Louis. He stopped 20 shots in regulation and overtime and then turned aside two of three shootout attempts.

Ethan Phillips, now a grad transfer at Western Michigan, scored a hat trick and added an assist in the Broncos 6-4 season-opening win against Ferris State. In his final game as a Terrier, Phillips had a goal and three assists in BU's 5-1 win over the Broncos in the Manchester Regional of the NCAA tournament.
