UPDATED Game Day BU vs. UNH round 3; Inside BU Hockey; Women take on BC

Game day graphic featuring posed photo of Doug Grimes. #10 BU vs. #16 UNH, Jan. 31, 7 PM at Agganis Arena on ESPN+.

# 10 Terriers will look to put last weekend in the rear-view mirror as they meet up with New Hampshire for a third time. Game time tonight at Agganis Arena is 7 p.m. with ESPN+ providing the live stream. Two weeks ago BU defeated the Wildcats, 6-3, at the Whit, and then 2-1 in overtime at home.

Terrier Head Coach Jay Pandolfo had been seeking "some consistency" in his forward lines. However after putting up big numbers against Vermont and in the UNH game in Durham, BU has gone three straight games without a five-on-five goal. That prompted the third-year coach to "mix it up a little bit, more than anything else."

Practice lines this week have been:
Harvey-Greene-Q. Hutson
Eiserman-Hughes-Kaplan
Lachance-Bednarik-Copponi
Svoboda-Amonte/Zetterberg-Roukounakis

Commenting on last Saturday's 2-0 loss, he explained, “We competed a lot harder. We had our chances. We just couldn’t find a way to beat Fowler. He’s a good goalie, but I learned we can play with anyone  if we play a certain way.”

Pandolfo also revealed during his media call that Mikhail "Mike" Yegorov's strong performance against BC Saturday had earned him the start against the Wildcats.

Defenseman Aiden Celebrini remains out of the line-up with an upper-body injury, but, Pandolfo reported, his recovery is ahead of schedule and hopes he'll return for the Providence series following the Beanpot.

Terriers' top three overall scorers are Quinn Hutson (12-14-26), Ryan Greene (11-13-24) and Cole Eiserman (14-7-21). Green, Eiserman and Cole Hutson are tied for third in conference scoring.

BU has a 16-8-4 record in games against the Wildcats at Agganis Arena and has an 18-1-2 in the last 21 meetings between the teams.

Last weekend UNH split a home series against Vermont, losing, 3-2, in overtime and winning, 5-2, to end a five-game skid. Sophomore Ryan Conmy continues to lead the Wildcats’ attack with 12 goals and 23 points, followed by Robert Cronin (20 points), Liam Devlin (19), Cy Leclerc (18) and Nick Ring (15). Colton Huard anchors the defense while Alaska-Anchorage transfer Jared Whale has a 2.39 GAA.

There will be an Agganis Arena 20th Anniversary Poster Giveaway at tonight's game.

UPDATED Protocol penalty update; Poll Story; P-O-W for Pietersen

The controversial protocol penalty at the start of Saturday's BU-BC games remains a hot topic.

The Boston Hockey Blog's Mitch Fink spoke with Hockey East Supervisor of Men’s Officials Brian Murphy and Associate Commissioner Brian Smith about the ruling.

“The BU goalkeeper came on the ice before the officials came on the ice and certainly before Boston College came on the ice. And as you’ll see in the timeline, the visiting team comes on last,” said Murphy, who was an NHL referee for 32 years before joining Hockey East in 2020.

Yegorov took the ice, alone, with around 39:30 on the game clock. According to the rulebook, officials must take the ice at 39:00, followed by the home team at 38:00 and the visiting team at 37:50

Yegorov was the only Terrier named to Hockey East's Weekly Top Performers list.

Mikhail Yegorov, BU (Fr., G; St. Petersburg, Russia) Stopped 23 of 24 shots in his NCAA debut at No. 1 Boston College, allowing just one power-play goal in a 2-0 defeat. He made several timely stops to keep the Terriers in the game.

Poll Story

Terriers slipped two slots to #10 in the USCHO Division 1 Poll. They’re one of six Hockey East schools in the top 10, along with #1 BC, #6 Maine, #7 Providence, #8 Lowell and #9 UConn. BU’s next opponent, New Hampshire is #18.

The Hockey East teams are in the same spots in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Poll, except for New Hampshire, which is #16. UMass is #20, giving the conference eight ranked teams.

John Buccigross’ rankings slot the Terriers at #8, while Everything College Hockey ranks BU #12.  BU fell to #10 in Pairwise which also has six Hockey East teams in the top 10.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)

It’s hard to find silver linings when you’re swept by your arch-rivals, including a shutout, but there certainly were a few. First, of course, is the performance of Mikhail “Mike” Yegorov in his first NCAA start, shaking off the early power-play goal, then making big-time stops throughout the game. He finished with 23 saves on 24 shots. (Thanks to @kinch8837 for this reel of Yegorov saves.)

Another was the Terriers’ compete level for 60 minutes against the #1 team with possibly the top collegiate goalie. “We were pretty good around our net,” Coach Jay Pandolfo said. “We didn’t give up much in the slot.” He added, “If we play that way, we’re going to win a lot of games down the stretch. That’s what we can take out of this.”

A third positive from the weekend was the continued strong play on penalty kills, yielding just that one power-play at the start of Saturday’s gamemore on that below—out of four chances for the Eagles. In the last seven conference games, BU has yielded just two goals on 22 man-advantages for opponents, largely attributable to the more aggressive kill the coaches have instituted.

As for the opening-minute goal Saturday, the NESN analyst describing the goal on replay notes that the BU bench was calling for a pick call. And BU’s sharp-eyed webcast analyst Mark Linehan called it out, too. If you watch the play at half speed, you’ll see James Hagens get on Brehdan Engum’s outside shoulder and angle him toward the middle of the ice as Leonard races by along the boards. Judge for yourself. Sure looks like a pick and sure had the intended effect.

The losses leave BU in second place in Hockey East, two points ahead of Maine (who has two games in hand) and four ahead of surging UConn.

A Neutral Zone scout, after viewing a recent NTDP U18 game offered thoughts on 2025 recruit Jack Murtagh.

Jack Murtagh (LW, L, 6’1″, 200, NTDP U18, 08/22/2007, Boston University)
Grade: A-
Comments: With a goal and two assists, Murtagh had himself an offensive night. He was able to open the scoring for Team USA tonight at a much-needed time. Murtagh was able to show tonight that he can beat you in a straight line with the puck on his stick, skate his way into space with good separation and win a lot of battles that require him to race onto loose pucks. He is technically sound he still however needs to build more strength through his core and legs to make him a bit more sturdy on his skates as he got bumped off the puck a couple times. That added strength will help with more explosiveness, balance and also will allow for him to be more confident on wall battles and battles below the goal line.

Looking back

Macklin Celebrini's 16th goal proved decisive in the Sharks' 2-1 win over the Penguins. It was the fourth game-winner for the 2024 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner. With 36 points, Celebrini is second in the rookie scoring race, three points behind Lane Hutson. Matt Grzelcyk picked up his 25th assist for Pittsburgh.

Jack Eichel scored his 15th goal in the Golden Knights’ 4-1 win against Florida. He has a team-high 62 points and is +28. He ranks 8th in the NHL in points and fourth (47) in assists.

Brady Tkachuk scored his 19th goal in Ottawa’s 3-1 win over Utah. Clayton Keller’s 18th was the sole UHC tally.

Congratulations to BU All-American and Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy and his wife, Kiley Sullivan, on the birth of their son, Rhys Michael McAvoy. Kiley is the daughter of former Terrier captain and current Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.

UPDATED Protocol penalty costly in loss to BC; Women re-open WBA with shutout win

Image

►Video Highlights added. See link below.

#8/9 Terriers dropped a gut-wrenching 2-0 decision to #1 BC at Conte Arena as the home team combined a power-play goal in the first minute, an empty-netter and impenetrable goaltending to stymie BU.

What appeared to be a special moment for a goalie making his NCAA debut turned out to be the undoing for the Terriers. By taking a solo lap before the home team took the ice, freshman Mikhail Yegorov incurred a delay of game penalty, putting the Eagles on the power play from the opening faceoff.

A visibly upset Jay Pandolfo told the media, post-game, "It's a joke that that's how the game starts."

Twenty-four seconds into the man-advantage, BC scored the only goal it would need. Ryan Leonard raced into the BU zone and wristed a hard shot from the right circle that Yegorov saved, but Teddy Stiga, driving to the slot, got to the rebound first and slammed it home.

After the opening goal, the 6’5” netminder from St. Peterburg, Russia, made several big saves before the somewhat rattled Terriers settled down and found their game.  BC would have one more power-play in the period and the Terriers would have two. During the second one, late in the period, Ryan Greene fired the only shot that would get past Jacob Fowler, but it rang off the post. Despite a 16-9 shot advantage, BU trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Early in the second period with BU on a 3-on-1 rush, Cole Eiserman’s shot was deflected away. Then, midway through the period, BC put together multiple grade-A chances-- the first by Leonard and a second by Andre Gasseau—that Yegorov, displaying quickness and agility, defended.

He followed that effort minutes later by fighting off a 2-on-0 from Stiga and Gabe Perreault.

Late in the period with BU on a power play, Cole Hutson attempted a “Skoog” lacrosse goal but couldn’t get it past Fowler who had 24 saves through two periods. Yegorov’s two-period save total was 18.

Terriers began the third period on a power play, but a turnover created a shorthanded chance for BC, which Yegorov snuffed out. Then, midway through the third, Eiserman blocked a shot and skated in alone on Fowler, but an Eagle backchecker did just enough to disrupt Eiserman's attempt.

Pandolfo pulled Yegorov with 1:25 remaining, but like on Friday, the result was an empty-net goal by Leonard.

Final shots were 30-25 in favor of BU. The stingy Eagle defense blocked 17 Terrier attempts.

“The kid battled, man. He played really well,” Pandolfo added. “In this environment, he’s never seen it, so I figured it’s actually less nervous not knowing about it. He’s a confident kid. He was excited about it. I’m just really happy with the way he played tonight.”

“We played well enough tonight to get some points out of this one, but just couldn’t find a way,” Pandolfo said. “We can build off this. If we play that way, we’re going to be in every game, we’re going to win a lot of games down the stretch here, so that’s what we can take out of this.”

#15 Terriers celebrated the re-opening of refurbished Walter Brown Arena with a 3-0 shutout of Holy Cross, giving BU a sweep of the Crusaders with shutouts at both ends. Sophomore goalie Mari Pietersen followed up Friday’s win by stopping all 15 shots she faced on Saturday.

BU remains tied for first place in Hockey East with UConn although the Terriers have a game in hand.

Captain Tamara Giaquinto put BU on the board at 15:18 of the opening period with a power-play goal.

That was followed two minutes later by a blast from the high slot by Clara Yuhn.

Then, midway through the middle period, Lindsay Bochna connected for a power-play goal. (video)

UPDATED: Fowler, BC foil Terriers; Women blank Crusaders; Save of the Year?

Image

#1 BC’s stingy defense and standout goalie Jacob Fowler were too much for #8/9 Terriers who fell to their crosstown rivals, 6-2, at Agganis Arena. The Eagles took a 4-2 lead after scoring three times in the middle period, then added a pair of empty-net tallies after beating back BU’s attempts at a rally.

BU’s two scores came 38 seconds apart on an extended power play in the opening period.

Coach Jay Pandolfo: "Disappointing. Lot of self inflicted stuff for our team again tonight." More here and linked below.

After a few turnovers in the opening minutes created scoring chances for BC, the Terriers went on the game’s first power play when Ryan Leonard was called for boarding. Yet another turnaround turned into a breakaway goal for Will Vote who beat Mathieu Caron through the five hole.

At the nine-minute mark, a dust-up between Matt Copponi and BC’s Michael Hagens resulted in a minor penalty to Copponi and a major to Hagens. After two minutes of 4-on-4, BU had a three-minute man-advantage and took advantage.

Tom Willander took a pass from Quinn Hutson at center point and set up Ryan Greene for a one-timer, saved by Fowler. The rebound went to Hutson who had driven to the net and flipped home a sharp-angle shot for his 12th goal and a 1-1 tie.

Thirty-eight seconds later BU connected again when Cole Hutson threw a puck to the end board and it bounced off a stanchion and into the slot. As Fowler moved toward the puck, both Jack Hughes and an Eagle defender went for the loose puck which slid to Cole Eiserman in the left circle. He wristed it past a lunging Fowler for his 14th goal and a 2-1 Terrier lead.

BU nearly added a third goal on the extended power play when Shane Lachance had a bid that tested the Eagle netminder. Terriers ended the period with a one-goal lead and an 11-6 shot advantage.

That lead disappeared five minutes into the middle period when BC scored on the rush. Teddy Stiga got his stick on a high pass from the point and the puck sailed over Caron.

Midway through the period with the teams skating four-on-four, Leonard raced through the Terrier defense and ripped a shot past Caron from the bottom of the right circle for BC’s first lead.

They doubled the margin two minutes later when Brady Berard buried a rebound.

The third period was all BU as they poured 14 shots on goal, but Fowler turned them all away. BU’s best chances came when Aiden Hreschuk tripped Kamil Bednarik. Before the whistle blew for the penalty, Devin Kaplan fired a backhander from the slot. During the man-advantage, Lachance had two close-in attempts foiled by Fowler and then Eiserman rang a shot off the left post.

Cole Hutson’s rip from the left circle was gloved by Fowler. With three minutes remaining Caron was pulled for an extra attacker, however Leonard controlled a puck in the defensive zone and fired it into the empty net. He repeated that again in the final minute to complete a hat trick.

Terriers travel to Conte Forum Saturday to complete the series with BC. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.

UPDATED Game Day: Terrier host BC at sold-out Agganis; Inside BU Hockey

Game day graphic featuring photo of Ryan Greene skating out to the blue line during introductions. BU vs. #1 Boston College, Agganis Arena, Jan. 24, 7 PM on ESPN+ and NESN.

It's the weekend that Terrier coaches, players and fans have long had circled on their calendars: The Battle of Commonwealth Ave. #8/9 Terriers will host #1 BC in the front end of a pivotal home-and-home series. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with NESN airing the game and live stream on ESPN+.

Tonight's contest is the 296th meeting in the series that began in 1918. BU holds a 140-134-21 (.510) lead despite dropping three of four to the Eagles a year ago, including the Hockey East title game.

Besides the ever-present bragging rights, first place in Hockey East is at stake. Terriers currently are on top, two points ahead of their ancient rivals.

BC has won four of five games this month with the only blemish a loss to Merrimack. BU has swept two series since the calendar turned.

While BC's attack boasts several high profile scorers--Hockey East's #2 scorer Gabe Perreault (28 points) and the #1 goal-scorer Ryan Leonard (15) as well as star freshman James Hagens (25 points), it's the Terriers with the better scoring offense numbers. BU is #2 nationally in team scoring with 3.90 goals per game, and, as well, owns the fourth best power-play success rate (28.0).

The Eagles, who are producing 3.24 goals per game, have the third stingiest defense yielding just 1.81 gpg. Sophomore Jacob Fowler, a USHL teammate of both Shane Lachance and Brandon Svoboda, has a 1.83 GAA, along with a .935 save percentage, and has pitched five shutouts.

BU's team defense is an unattractive 3.90--inflated by the 20 goals surrendered in the series with North Dakota and Michigan, and seven at Yale--but in the last five conference games, it's a more acceptable 2.20.

"I think everyone's really excited," Coach Jay Pandolfo told the media Thursday. "I think it's a really good challenge for our group, playing against number one, a huge rival...but also they're the No. 1 team in the country. So it's a great opportunity for us to see where we're at as a team."

Juniors Quinn Hutson (25 points) and Ryan Greene (23; 6-4-10 in the last five games) have been wielding hot sticks for BU. So has Cole Hutson with 3-7-10 in his last five) and Cole Eiserman's 13 goals are the most for a freshman nationally.

Image

“They obviously have a really good top line that we’ve got to make sure we contain to the best of our abilities,” said sophomore captain Lachance. We just have to make sure we have all of our guys back. They have super skilled players that can finish.”

Success against the top-ranked Eagles will require a more disciplined game from BU, limiting penalties.

“I feel like we’ve gotten a little better recently, but there’s still some games that we’re taking penalties that are unnecessary,” Pandolfo said. “It’s something that we’re still trying to improve on. Our guys have an understanding of that, but they’re not showing it quite yet, game in and game out.”

Goalie Mikhail Yegorov, a second-round NJ Devils draft pick, has been added to the roster, but senior Mathieu Caron will be between the pipes Friday evening.

Mathieu Caron skating to the blue line during introductions at Agganis

“He’s coming off two really solid weekends for us, but he played excellent Saturday night against UNH, especially in the third there when we took three penalties,” Pandolfo said. “Made some big saves on the penalty kill.”
