Team USA repeats at WJCs with big contributions from Terrier Trio

Cole Eiserman, Cole Hutson and Brandon Svoboda pose together with their World Junior gold medals after the championship game

At the 2025 World Junior Championship in Ottawa, Team USA rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Finland in overtime, 4-3, and successfully defend the gold medal won a year ago. After Brandon Svoboda triggered the comeback with his third goal of the tournament, Cole Hutson, on a strong individual effort, brought the U.S. even in the final minute of the second period with his third goal of the tournament. Following a scoreless third, BC's Teddy Stiga scored the game-winner.

All four U.S. goals were scored by Terriers and Eagles, and, remarkably, 36 of 37 in the seven games had a BU or BC point.

Brother Lane Hutson, a gold-medal winner in 2024, flew in from Colorado to join his parents to watch Cole play a pivotal role in the U.S. win. He became the first defenseman to lead the WJC in scoring with a 3-8-11 scoring line.

Hutson was named one of the top three U.S. players and was voted by the media to the tournament all-star team.

Team USA Head Coach David Carle on Hutson's performance:

“Very dynamic. I mean, great plays, attacking. We asked him to kind of rein it in a little bit even. In the first couple games, him and Z just a little too much at times, and our balance on the ice wasn't what it needed to be, and those guys kind of picked their spots better and at the end of the day it didn't take anything away from them offensively. It actually enhanced it. So really proud of him and I mean, there's not much else you can say about him as a player. World class, vision, the shot. There's just so much. Everything that he does is exceptional.”

Cole Eiserman finished the tournament with a 3-4-7 scoring line, including the power-play game-winner in the semifinal win over Czechia. The Athletic's Scott Wheeler pointed out:

"While he's playing primarily on the power play, when he's got out there at five-on-five, I've felt he's played with intensity and has done a good job chasing down pucks and applying pressure on the forecheck."

Svoboda, who centered the fourth line, was particularly effective in his role with a 3-3-6 scoring line and was very strong at the face-off dot and on penalty kills.

The U.S. roster featured 10 skaters from Hockey East: six from BC, three from BU and one from Providence.
