UPDATED Eiserman's elite asset; Pandolfo re-ups; Greer's Cup Day; New contracts for Fensore and Skoog

 Cole Eiserman - Men's Ice Hockey ...

BHB's Mitch Fink, in a summer gig for the New York Post, spoke with Islanders' draft pick Cole Eiserman's old coaches about what sets the Terrier sharp-shooter apart.

U.S. National Team Development Program head coach Nick Fohr and Peter Morris, Eiserman’s old peewee coach, agreed on their assessment: it’s all in the hands.

“For me, it’s a release thing,” Fohr said. “It just happens quicker than what people are used to. The puck’s already off his stick in a lot of cases when it wouldn’t be off somebody else’s, and it’s to the goalie before he realizes it’s there.”

Morris agreed, adding that Eiserman has learned how to optimize his stick’s kick point, the flex or bend that generates power during a shot.

“It’s not a slow buildup,” Morris said. “His bottom hand really leans into it. It’s short, it’s quick, it’s explosive.”

Head coach Jay Pandolfo will be behind the Terrier bench for the foreseeable future after signing a multi-year contract extension.

In three seasons as head coach, the 50-year-old Winchester, Mass., native has led BU to an 81-35-4 record for a .680 winning percentage, second only to Jack Kelley (.714) among all BU hockey coaches.

Pandolfo's teams have won the school's 32nd Beanpot title, one Hockey East championship (2023) and three NCAA regional championships, earning three trips to the Frozen Four and playing in last season's national championship game. He earned Hockey East Coach of the Year honors in 2022-23 and has been a finalist for the Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year award each of the three seasons.

Between his days as a Terrier in the 1990s and his term as head coach, Pandolfo has been to the Frozen Four all seven times.

Pandolfo won the Stanley Cup twice (2000, 2003) with New Jersey in a 14-year NHL career.

The Athletic's Scott Wheeler's annual ranking of drafted goalies under 25 has rising sophomore Mikhail Yegorov at #4. Here's what he wrote about Big Mike:

Yegorov is a freak athlete who wowed some people at the combine in advance of the draft and has high-end attributes. He’s a 6-foot-5 goaltender with raw, natural athleticism that presents itself in his ability to go post-to-post or low-to-high. He’s also got good hands, and he reads and anticipates the play smartly. He started his post-draft season by returning to the USHL with the Lancers, a team in disarray that often got shelled with shots. After posting a .912 save percentage across 19 games and just three wins to show for it, Yegorov accelerated his commitment to Boston University and joined the Terriers for the second half (where he was excellent early and into the Beanpot, and really made a world of difference for that team, elevating its ceiling and backstopping BU into the Frozen Four). Yegorov was one of the stories of the college hockey season (the five goals he gave up in the final were the most he’d surrendered after joining the Terriers). The talent is all there. He’s a big, long, lean goalie who should get stronger, is quick on his feet and in and out of his butterfly with clear technical skills as well. With the right patience, there’s some serious untapped potential in Yegorov’s game that should continue to reveal itself.

Looking back

AJ Greer, who became the 13th Terrier to win the Stanley Cup, had his “Cup Day” this past Sunday, celebrating with a parade in his hometown of Joliette, Quebec, and enabling fans to have their photo taken with the historic silver trophy.

His teammate, Evan Rodrigues, won the Cup for a second straight season with Florida. The two forwards also were teammates on BU's 2015 Hockey East champion and national finalist squads.

Dom Fensore, who captained BU's 2022-23 Hockey East champions, has been re-signed by Carolina for next season.  A third-round pick by the Canes in 2019, Fensore made his NHL debut in the team's final two regular-season games, becoming the 99th Terrier to play in the NHL.

In his second AHL season, Fensore set career highs in goals (9) and points (32) while leading all league d-men with three short-handed goals and five short-handed points. He was honored by the Wolves with their 2025 Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award.

The Panthers have re-signed Wilmer Skoog to a one-year, two-way deal for $770K (NHL) and $150K (AHL).  Over two seasons with AHL Charlotte, he had 55 points.

The new contract coincides with the 26th birthday of the former BU fan favorite. Our friend BU Hockey Stats marks the occasion with clips of his three lacrosse-style goals.
