Former Friar O'Brien to join BU for '20-'21


NeutralZone is reporting that former Providence College center and 2018 first-round draft pick of the Flyers (#19 overall) Jay O’Brien has committed to BU for the 2020-21 season. The 5-11, 180 lb. right-shot from Hingham, Mass., will spend next season in the BCHL, skating for Penticton, along with BU 2020 recruit Cade Webber.

O’Brien struggled during his freshman season with the Friars, scoring five points (2G,3A) in 25 games. New England Hockey Journal reported that “An early season hit to the head resulted in a concussion and O’Brien was never fully able to integrate himself into the Friars’ lineup.” He skated for Team USA in the 2019 World Junior Championships but was scoreless in seven games and elected to leave PC shortly after the season ended.


A ’99 birthdate, O’Brien played his final two high school seasons for BU standout Tony Amonte at Thayer Academy. In 2017-18, he scored 80 points in 30 games, earning USA Today’s All-USA Boys Hockey Player of the Year award. Previously, O’Brien played for another former Terrier, Dan Donato at the Dexter School, scoring 34 points (14G, 20A) in 29 games as a sophomore. He played his midget hockey for the Cape Cod Whalers.  

O’Brien joins a strong 2020 recruit class that includes defensemen Webber and Braden Doyle, goalie Drew Commesso and forwards Dylan Peterson, Luke Tuch, Liam Connors and Brian Carrabes. 

Playing last night in the HD Pro League opening night game, O'Brien, skating on Team Taz with Logan Cockerill and incoming freshman John Copeland, earned first-star honors in a 7-4 win.

Cup connections; Summer hockey for Terriers; 2009 champs' reunion.


With the Blues defeat of the Bruins in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, five Terriers—three skaters and two coaches— fell short of adding their names to the Cup. But there are two BU connections to the champion Blues: former Terrier and NHL standout Keith Tkachuk is a St. Louis scout and Bill Armstrong, father of incoming freshman Jamie Armstrong, is assistant general manager and Director of Amateur Scouting.

More than 20 former, current and future Terriers are skating in the Foxboro Summer League’s pro and pro development divisions. Among them are Charlie McAvoy, Charlie Coyle, Jordan Greenway, Bobo Carpenter, Brien Diffley, Brian Strait, Chad Krys, Max Willman, Doyle Somerby, Danny O’Regan, Ty Amonte, graduate transfer Alex Brink, Patrick Curry, Cade Webber, Robert Mastrosimone, Trevor Zegras, John Copeland, Braden Doyle, Drew Commesso, Liam Connors and Nick Roukounakis.

The pro development league began play this past week while the pro division kicks off on July 10. Games are played at the Foxboro Sports Center.

As the NHL Entry Draft approaches, The Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy spoke with 2019 recruit right wing Ethan Phillips, whom he suggests “could outperform his draft number.” THN ranks the right wing from Nova Scotia, who helped Sioux Falls win the USHL Clark Cup championship, at #71. Stanley Cup Playoffs
On the eve of game seven of the Stanley Cup finals, Matt Grzelyck's availability remains uncertain. He's missed the last four games with a concussion. UPDATE:
Charlie Coyle has 16 points (9G, 7A) in 23 playoff games this year. In 44 previous playoff games, he has 15 points. Charley McAvoy, the third Terrier skating for the Bruins, explained their game six win.

Looking ahead 
With the 2019 NHL Entry Draft less than two weeks away, several Terrier recruits have seen their stock rise. Trevor Zegras, projected to be a top 10 pick, is reportedly among those under consideration at #3 by the Blackhawks, according to their vice president of amateur scouting, Mark Kelley, son of legendary BU coach Jack Kelley.  

 A Los Angeles Kings (#5 pick) fan site posted an audio report from the NHL combine on Zegras by ESPN’s Chris Peters.

Draft evaluator TPE Hockey, which ranks Zegras at #5, projects three BU recruits for early in the second round: Alex Vlasic (32), Domenick Fensore (35) and Robert Mastrosimone (38).




The Buffalo News interviewed NTDP defenseman Case McCarthy, from nearby Clarence Center, N.Y., at the NHL Combine. The 6’1”, 198 right-shot defenseman, who was in touch with Jack Eichel prior to the combine, grew up a Sabres fan watching Chris Drury and Mike Grier.
