Hohmann inks AHL contract; Harper, Crone named to US Select 18 squad

Cason Hohmann (photo) joins Jack Eichel and Evan Rodrigues in the Sabres organization, signing a one-year contract with Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans.  The Arlington, Texas, native scored 31 points last season, including five goals in eight playoff games. At the annual post-season banquet, Hohmann received the Friends Award as Unsung Hero and the Iron Terrier Award (strength & conditioning), and was co-recipient of the Bennett McInnis Spirit Award. He finished his four years at BU with 92 points.

Rising sophomores Brien Diffley (photo) and J.J. Piccinich have been invited to Toronto Maple Leafs development camp in Toronto beginning July 7.  Piccinich, was a 2014 Leafs’ draft choice. Also headed to a development camp is returning goalie Sean Maguire, who was drafted by Pittsburgh in 2012 (4th round), and rising senior Matt Lane, who will attend the Vancouver camp in Shawnigan, B.C., beginning today.

Doyle Sommerby will attend another Islanders mini-camp, to be held for the first time at Brooklyn's Barclay Center.

At the end of Columbus Blue Jackets development camp, 2017 recruit Kole Sherwood and his Miami-bound brother Kieffer talked with Blue Jackets TV.
Looking ahead
2017 recruits Patrick Harper and Hank Crone have been named to the US Select U18 squad that will compete next month in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The team was selected from the top performers at the just completed USA Hockey’s Select 17 camp concluded yesterday. Harper, who led Avon Old Farms in scoring last season, was co-points-leader at the Select 17 with 10 points (6G, 4A), including a goal and an assist in yesterday’s tournament all-star game.

Crone, who skated for USHL Omaha last season, scored three points in the tournament and also played in the all-star game.  After another season at Avon, Harper is expected to join Crone in Omaha for the 2016-17 season.

Former Terrier standout, and U.S. Olympian Clark Donatelli, currently head coach of the ECHL Wheeling Nailers, will be an assistant coach for Team USA.

Looking back
Former Terrier John McCarthy has returned to San Jose, signing a one-year deal with the Sharks. Between 2009 and 2014, the co-captain of BU’s 2009 NCAA champions, made 87 NHL starts for the Sharks. He signed a free-agent deal with the Blues last summer. Then, last season, after St. Louis loaned McCarthy to the Worcester Sharks, he became that franchise’s all-time scoring leader.
