Hockey East to resume this month; recruit class ranked #4 — UPDATED

Hockey East released a video indicating that the Conference will return to action on Nov. 20, but without any schedule details.

● Boston Globe Hockey East targeting Nov. 20 start date

►College Hockey News has ranked BU’s freshman class at #4 among D1 programs with goalie Drew Commesso listed among the top newcomers to watch:

Drew Commesso, G, Boston University — In 2019-20, the Terriers allowed the third-most goals of any Hockey East team. The season before that, they tied for fourth-most. The crease has been BU’s weakness as of late, and Commesso figures to be the fix. His 2.18 goals against average last season is good for the second-best number in NTDP U-18 history, and he sported a solid .920 save percentage to boot. Terriers sophomore goalie Ashton Abel performed admirably in the second half of last season, but Commesso is very much capable of winning - and keeping - the starting job. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound freshman was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Looking ahead

2021 recruit Quinn Hutson recorded a hat trick—including a flashy game-winning goal—and added an assist in Penticton’s 6-3 win against Vernon. With the win, the Vees finished the round-robin portion of the pre-season Okanagan Cup tournament with an 11-1-0 record and head to the semifinals next weekend against Salmon Arm. Hutson, a 5-10 right wing who leads the tournament in goals with nine, generated 51 tallies in 59 games last season for North Jersey Avalanche 18U.

2021 recruit Brian Carrabes had the lone tally for Sioux City in a 5-1 loss to Tri-City in his team’s first regular-season game. The 5’8” right wing from North Andover, who previously played for Kimball Union Academy, St. John's Prep and, last season, Sioux Falls had a 3-2-5 line in three pre-season games.

Another 2021 recruit, Liam Connors, has been added to the Des Moines Buccaneers’roster. Connors captained St. Sebastian's last season and recorded a team-high 41 points in 28 games.

Looking back

Received a link to Next Shift hockey podcasts featuring interviews with players whose on-ice careers have ended and who have taken their next career step. The newest one is with Brian Strait (#29 on the podcast list), a defenseman and assistant captain on BU’s 2009 national champions. A Penguins’ third-round draft pick, he played seven NHL seasons, primarily with the Islanders, and several AHL seasons. Strait is now a player development coach with the Devils.

Next Shift has also interviewed three other Terrier defensemen: US Olympian and co-captain of the 1978 national champs Jack O’Callahan (#24); former Terriers Head Coach and now Rangers Head Coach David Quinn (#18); and Colby Cohen (#4), the M.O.P. of the 2009 NCAA title game

In the initial USCHO weekly poll, BU is ranked at #9, the same spot where the Terriers were ranked in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll last week. BU finished last season at 24-8-4.
