This Date in BU Hockey History: March 16

1972: A week after winning their first ECAC championship with a 4-1 win against Cornell, defending national champion Terriers faced Wisconsin in the NCAA semifinals at Boston Garden.

BU was minus two key players: senior defenseman Bob Murray, injured in the Cornell game; and All-American goalie Dan Brady, injured during practice.

Senior Tim Regan, who had seen only brief action since returning from the Sapporo Olympic Games, stepped in for Brady. In opening period, he gave up an apparently soft goal to UW’s Brian Erickson from 65 feet out for a 1-0 Badger lead.

With BU on a power play early in the second period, Erickson skated in alone on shorthanded attempt, but Regan came up with a spectacular glove stop. The 5-bell save shifted momentum to the Terriers. Paul Giandomenico tied the score, assisted by Steve Dolloff. Then, late the period, BU’s power play finally clicked as Captain Jake Danby scored off passes from Bob Gryp and Ron Anderson for a 2-1 lead.

Danby scored again seven minutes into the third period, assisted by Toot Cahoon and Ric Jordan, and completed his hat trick with an empty-netter for a 4-1 final. Regan stopped 26 of 27 shots.

The victory set up a rematch with Cornell, victor over Denver, in the NCAA title game.

Looking back

Matt Grzecyk's overtime goal—his third tally of the season—was the game-winner in the Bruins 2-1 win at Chicago.

Danny O’Regan’s assist—and first NHL point this season—gave Anaheim a third-period lead but the Rangers overtook the Ducks for a 4-3 overtime win.

Prior to the recent match-up of the Devils and Ducks that brought Trevor Zegras and Jack Hughes on the ice as pros for the first time, NHL.com talked about the NTDP teammates and friends with another Team USA teammate, Case McCarthy.
