In a high-scoring Scarlet & White scrimmage at Agganis Arena, Team White edged Team Red, 5-4, before a crowd estimated at 450. Sophomore Brian Carrabes scored two goals and later converted in the penalty shot competition. Three freshmen--Jeremy Wilmer, Quinn Hutson and Lane Hutson--also found the net. Quinn Hutson converted his penalty shot attempt.

Head Coach Jay Pandolfo addressed attendees in the Burke Room and again stressed the goal of being "hard to play against" all the time, noting that it was "something we'd gotten away from in recent years." Thanking Terrier Nation for its support, he pointed out that part of being hard to play against is a vocal crowd and a filled arena. The first year head coach also discussed the need for consistency of effort, a concept, he said, "the team has bought into."
Four players didn't dress for the scrimmage: Captain Dom Fensore, and forwards Dylan Peterson, Wilmer Skoog and Luke Tuch. Fensore also addressed the post-game gathering.
Team White's first line of Matt Brown, Jay O'Brien and Ethan Phillips created early opportunities but it was their second line that produced the first goals.
Nick Zabaneh out-raced a defenseman for the puck and slipped it to Tristan Amonte who set up Carrabes' one-timer.
After Team Scarlet's Wilmer stole a puck and beat Drew Commesso from close range, Carrabes fired a shot past Vinny Duplessis from the left circle to make it 2-1, White.
White upped the lead to 3-1 when Lane Hutson set up Ty Gallagher for a one-time blast from the left circle, but just a minute later, Scarlet cut into the margin as Wilmer set up Quinn Hutson just outside the crease.
Lane Hutson's goal put White ahead 4-2 at the end of 5-on-5 play. Five minutes of 4-on-4 yielded one goal, Zabaneh's tally off a 2-on-1 rush with O'Brien. Then, during 3-on-3 action, Scarlet scored twice. Sean Driscoll converted a Devin Kaplan pass and Jamie Armstrong scored just seconds later.
In the shootout competition, Carrabes, Armstrong and Quinn Hutson scored. Hutson faked lifting the puck for a lacrosse shot before rifling a low shot home.
A few observations:
-The entire scrimmage was played at a fast pace with both teams showing urgency.
-Lane Hutson is as advertised. An elusive skater with great vision whose passing creates scoring opportunities.
-Wilmer is a clever passer and strong on the puck despite his size.
-Greene is center with size, good on faceoffs and notable for back-checking.
-Kaplan--a strong forechecker, very physical, good puck skills around the net.
-Quinn Hutson--great hands and a finisher's touch
-DHO Doug Friedman says this is a very skilled freshman class that only lacks D1 experience.
-Phillips plays a dynamic skating game, hunts pucks.
-Zabaneh's speed was on display throughout the game. He also rang a shot off the crossbar.
-Senior Case McCarthy and junior Thomas Jarman, who missed most of last season, put some heavy checks on teammates.
-At the post-game gathering, Pandolfo displayed a command of the room, much in the way that David Quinn did.
Looking ahead
2023 recruit Ryan Fine scored a goal and added an assist in the NTDP U18s' 6-3 win against Muskegon. The right-shot forward from Center Moriches, NY earned first-star honors. A product of the Mid-Fairfield Rangers organization, he had 22 points in his U17 season. 2023 or 2024 recruit Kai Janviriya also had an assist for Team USA.
2023 recruit Anton Castro stopped all 11 shots in 30 minutes of action in Fargo's 5-1 win against Sioux Falls.
Shane Lachance scored his third goal of the weekend as Youngstown completed a sweep of Chicago with a 4-0 win. Last season, he had an 11-12-23 scoring line for the Phantoms.
2023 recruit Jack Gorton scored a goal in BCHL Victoria's 5-2 win against Cowichan Valley.
2023 recruit Michael LaStarza scored a goal in Sioux Falls' 7-4 exhibition game win against Wenatchee in a Friday night BCHL-USHL interleague contest.
2024 recruit Cal Hughes had a goal for Mount St. Charles/RI Saints 16U in a 6-1 win against Seacoast Academy.
