Terriers prepare for UMass series; Bowers called up to Avs

After a bye week and nearly two weeks since their comeback overtime win against Lowell, the Terriers are getting to ready to resume Hockey East action.

Note: a game day post will appear on Friday.

Head coach Jay Pandolfo spoke with the media today about what his team has been emphasizing in practices:


"We've worked on some things that need improvement. It's another big Hockey East weekend against a really strong opponent. I'm sure they're going to be motivated coming off losses to Providence.

"We worked on every part of our game, working on our breakouts--get a little cleaner there. Working on our D-zone coverage, working on our forecheck, I think that needs to get better. If our forecheck gets better, it's going to help our offense. I think we can certainly still get some more scoring five-on-five.

"Our special teams have been average up to this point, so we spent a lot of time working on our penalty kill, working on our power play.

"We're still taking too many penalties. The last game against Lowell was better...UMass has really good special teams on both sides, power play and penalty kill. We have to make sure our special teams are good...and our discipline is good.

"Our biggest strength is our speed and our skating. When we're moving our feet, pushing the pace, I think that's when we're at our best. Over the course of the first seven games, it's been inconsistent. At times we've shown it. When we have, we've gotten the better of the play."


 

►A pair of upcoming Terrier games have been selected for broadcast on ESPN linear (i.e., non-streaming) platforms.  BU’s day-before-Thanksgiving (11/23) home game with Notre Dame will air on ESPNU, while the first meeting of the year between the Terriers and Eagles—Dec. 9 at Conte Forum—will air on ESPNEWS.

The two games are part of the 640 college hockey games that will air on ESPN networks and stream on ESPN+, culminating in the men’s and women’s national championship games.

Announcers for the BU-BC game will be John Buccigross and former BU All-American and Most Outstanding Player in the 2009 National Championship game Colby Cohen. Clay Matvick and Andrew Raycroft will call the match with the Fighting Irish.

►The annual Friends of BU Hockey Holiday Skate will take place Saturday, Nov. 26., following the Terriers' exhibition game with the NTDP U18s. A ticket to the game will be required for entry.  Registration  

 

Looking ahead

2023 or 2024 recruit Kai Janviriya scored his second goal in Team USA's  6-1 win against Czechia in the opening game of the Five Nations tournament at USA Rink in Plymouth, Mich. The right-shot defenseman from nearby Bloomfield Hills has six points this season.

2024 recruit Kamil Bednarik's steal and shorthanded goal got Team USA on the board in what would be a 6-1 win against Canada Black in the World U17 Challenge in British Columbia. A left-shot center from Elmhurst, Ill., Bednarik has a 4-5-9 scoring line in 14 games.

2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy signed his National Letter of Intent this week. Like older brother Case McCarthy, he's a right-shot defenseman and has been projected to be a second- round pick in the next NHL Entry draft.

Charley McAvoy made his season debut tonight against the Flames, returning to the line-up following shoulder surgery last June.

Former Terrier center Shane Bowers makes his NHL debut tonight for the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche and becomes the 92nd Terriers to play in the NHL. The Halifax, N.S., native spent the past three seasons with the AHL Colorado Eagles and has a 2-4-6 line in 10 AHL games this season.

A 2017 first-round pick of Ottawa, Bowers, who joins Evan Rodrigues on the Avs roster, spent two seasons as a Terrier. As a freshman in 2017-18, he played a major role for the team that went 22-14-4, won the Hockey East Championship and reached the NCAA regional final. His 17 goals were second on the team and his 32 points were third. Bowers had 21 points in his sophomore season before turning pro with the Avs, who had traded for his rights.

The Athletic asked members of the Sharks why they wear their numbers.

Nick Bonino, No. 13

"I was No. 3 in high school at a public school and then No. 11 at prep school. When I got to (Boston University), I think around that time I had become a pretty big (Pavel) Datsyuk fan, so I just combined them and went with 13. I’ve been pretty fortunate that 13 has been open with every NHL team I’ve played on."

Note: Bonino started his NHL career with No. 63 for Anaheim, but eventually wore 13 for the Ducks, and each of the six clubs he’s played for. 

Matt Nieto, No. 83 

"There’s not really a cool story behind it. It was just my rookie camp number that was assigned to me. After my first year, they asked if I wanted to change, but not many guys had it in the league and I thought that was cool and unique so I stuck with it. It’s not really a number that is taken anywhere, so when I went to Colorado it was available, and when I came back here it was still available."
