#11 Terriers take on #19 Notre Dame in a midweek game at Agganis Arena with puck drop at 5:00 P.M. The game, which will air on ESPNU, will be BU’s third against a Big 10 team. BU and Michigan split a two-game series last month.
Today’s matchup is the first between the schools since the Irish left Hockey East to join the Big 10 in 2017. In February of 2017, the teams split a two-game series at Agganis with Notre Dame winning the first, 3-1, and BU winning the second, 4-1. The series began in Dec. 1970 when the Terrier defeated the Irish, 7-3, in the championship game of the Boston Arena Christmas Tournament.
“We’re used
to playing Friday-Saturday weekend games and it kind of gets monotonous after a
while. Practicing four days a week, then playing Friday-Saturday, so, It’s a
little different for us and I think our guys are excited coming off of a big
win on Saturday,” head coach Jay Pandolfo said.
Notre Dame (6-6-2) is coming off conference series splits with Michigan (at home) and Ohio State (on the road). They dropped a 5-2 decision to the Buckeyes before shutting them out, 1-0.
Coached by Jeff Jackson, the Fighting Irish are a veteran team with six grad transfers, four seniors and eight juniors. Junior Ryder Rolston and grad transfer Chayse Primeau each have 10 points. Senior Trevor Janicke and grad student Nick Leivermann have eight a piece. The win over OSU was senior goalie Ryan BIchal’s third shutout. He has a 2.45 GAA and a 929 save percentage.
“I think Notre Dame plays a bit of a different style than Michigan does,” Pandolfo said. “They’re a little bit more structured, so we have to be ready for that. We have to play a simple game against Notre Dame.” [Jackson’s] teams have always played with a lot of structure and defense. We have to have a similar mindset.
The first-year head coach noted that in game against structured teams like UConn and Lowell, the Terriers have played well in stretches. When they don’t get rewarded on the scoresheet, they gotten away from their game identity..
“We have to stick to playing a direct game,” Pandolfo added. “We can’t get fancy against teams that have a lot of structure. You have to play behind them, you can’t turn pucks over. You have to really manage the puck.”
Terriers
have won four of their last five games and stand at 7-4-0. Senior Matt Brown is
the points leader and goals co-leader with a 6-8-14 line. Freshmen Lane Hutson
and Ryan Greene each have a dozen points. Captain Dom Fensore and freshman Quinn
Hutson have eight apiece. Drew Commesso
has a 5-2-0 record with a 2.47 GAA and a .913 save percentage.

with Dubuque. With a 2-12-14 scoring line, the 6’1.5” right-shot defenseman, who is the younger brother of Terrier assistant captain Case McCarthy, is
tied for second among USHL blueliners in points. This past summer he earned a
spot on the US U18 Select Team and last week he was named to the U.S. squad for the World Junior A Challenge set for Dec. 10 in Cornwall, Ontario.
