 Merry Christmas, Terrier Nation!

The day after Christmas two international tournamentsthe 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship and the Spengler Cupwill get underway with five current Terriers and a future one among the participants.

Team USA will seek to three-peat at the WJCs in St. Paul and will look to win gold for the first time on U.S. soil. Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson are among the returnees from the 2025 WJC champs. They'll be joined on the U.S. roster by newcomers Kamil Bednarik and 2026 recruit Brady Knowling

Bednarik, Eiserman and Hutson will be skating with many of their teammates from the 2024 IIHF World U18s, where they lost to Canada in the gold-medal game.

Team USA has featured at least one Terrier on its WJC roster every December since 2014. (h/t to @BUHockeyStats).

The Spengler Cup, played annually in Davos, Switzerland, also begins on the 26th with Team USA facing off against Team Canada.

For the first time in the Spengler Cup’s 102-year history, 25 NCAA DI men’s hockey players, including Terrier captain Gavin McCarthy, will compete against international competition as part of the U.S. Collegiate Selects team.

Team USA practiced at Walter Brown Arena for the past few days before flying to Switzerland early today,.

In previous years, the U.S. team has been drawn largely from Americans playing in Europe.

Games will be available on the Spengler Cup YouTube Channel with English commentary.

Looking ahead

RecScouting’s Managing Editor Gabriel Foley profiles six candidates for the #1 ranking in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, including 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence.

Tynan Lawrence, C, Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL)

Season to Date - 8 Goals, 5 Assists, 13 Points in 9 Games (2nd in Points-Per-Game in USHL)

The center class is scant this season - which is a nag with how expensive centers are on the trade market right now. But on top of the pile is a real gem in Tynan Lawrence. He plays a full and complete, two-way game with smooth command of puck-movement. You feel Lawrence’s presence when he’s on the ice - and everyone in Muskegon will talk in depth about the impact he had on the team’s championship-winning roster last season.

He is a true, top center - or, I guess I should say, so it seems. I believe in the kid, he’s got the right energy. Great in the rink. To stick with my run of comparisons, I see a lot of Hischier and Suzuki in how Lawrence controls the middle lane from the second layer of both zones. He’s not a player that everyone has an opinion on just yet - but he’s absolutely caught more than a few eyes. He won’t have the chance to shine at World Juniors, but Muskegon is having another big year. Another chip and the pre-draft interviews this kid will have could launch his stock in the second half.

* I’ll add, getting to see Lawrence at BU next season is one of the things I’m looking forward to most in the hockey sphere.

Pros - Rare Value This Year, Projectable Build, Strong Track Record, Two-Way Impact
Cons - Coming Off Injury, Playing At Lower Level than Pro/NCAA Peers, A Few Years Away From NHL

RJ Celebrini is not a Terrier recruit yet, but he's already making a name for himself, playing up in a 15U league in Vancouver. Conor Bedard recently stopped by with words of encouragement for the future star.

Looking back

Macklin Celebrini scored his 19th goal of the season as the Sharks were rolled by the Golden Knights, 7-2. With 55 points, he is tied for third in the NHL in scoring and is tied with Sidney Crosby for yet another milestone in his young career.

Lane Hutson assisted on a trio of goals and was +4 in a 6-2 win over the Bruins.  Hutson, last year's Calder Trophy winner, has a 5-30-35 scoring line in 37 games and is tied for third among NHL blueliners.

Clayton Keller scored the game-winner, just 13 seconds into overtime, sending the Mammoth to a 4-3 win over Winnipeg. The Utah captain also added an assist. He has a 12-20-32 scoring line.

Trevor Zegras assisted on a goal—extending his point-scoring streak to nine games—in the Flyers’ 3-1 win over Chicago. Zegras has 37 points (15G,22A) in 36 games. Matt Grzelcyk assisted on the Blackhawks’ lone goal.

Ryan Greene, who did not make the scoresheet for Chicago, has seen his ice time and his role grow to include power-play time. He has 12 points (4G,8A) in 36 games, including a pair of assists last Saturday against Ottawa.

"Greene has been doing a great job there," [Assistant Coach Mike] Velluci said of the new top center for the time being. "He's been put in a tremendous role for us. He's on the penalty kill, he's on the power play, he is in our top six. He's gotten better every day."
