WJCs and Spengler Cup drop the puck

In Team USA's WJC preliminary round 6-3 win over Germany, Cole Hutson set up the game-winner by Will Zellers and then assisted on a "Cole Train" tally with Cole Eiserman firing home a one-timer.

After Germany scored twice in the second period to shrink Team USA's 3-0 lead to a single goal, Hutson fired a hard, low wrister from the top of the left circle. The German goalie made the save, but Zellers, a one-timer BU recruit now at North Dakota, jumped on the rebound to increase the lead to 4-2.

Later in the period, Hutson set up Eiserman for a one-timer from the left circle that appeared labeled, but goalie Lennart Neisse denied him with 5-bell lunging save. Moments later, Hutson teed up his teammate at the same spot again and this time Eiserman left no time for goalie heroics. (both the save and goal are in this video)

2026 recruit Brady Knowling dressed as the back-up goal for the U.S., but did not see any action, while Kamil Bednarik was a healthy scratch.

Team USA is back on the ice Saturday to face Switzerland in a 6 p.m. ET start.

Spengler Cup

College Hockey to Send First-Ever Team to 2025 Spengler Cup ...

In the other international tournament that began Friday, the U.S. Collegiate Selects dropped a 3-2 decision to Canada in their opener. After Canada opened a 3-0 lead, Terrier captain Gavin McCarthy got the U.S. on the board with a snipe from the slot.

UMass forward Jack Musa cut the margin to one, but the U.S. could get no closer.

The Collegiate Selects take on tournament host HC Davos today at 2:15 p.m. ET. The game is available on the Spengler Cup YouTube channel.
