UPDATED: P-O-W for Eiserman; Three named to WJC Camp Roster; SNL; Greene's role grows

Sophomore Cole Eiserman, who fired the game-winner in Saturday Night's Red Hot Hockey win against Cornell at Madison Square Garden has earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors. The Newburyport, Mass., native also set up BU's first goal by his fellow Islanders draft pick and longtime linemate Kamil Bednarik. In addition to his two points, Eiserman played a strong two-way game, creating opportunities and back-checking to break up plays.

 Four Terriers were named to Hockey East's Weekly Top Performers list.

Charlie Trethewey, BU (Fr., D; Woodbine, Md.) Provided the primary assist on Cole Eiserman’s game-winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over No. 17 Cornell at Red Hot Hockey. He also led the Terriers with two blocked shots.

Gavin McCarthy, BU (Jr., D; Clarence Center, N.Y.) Assisted on Kamil Bednarik’s first-period strike in the Terriers’ 2-1 win over No. 17 Cornell on Saturday at Red Hot Hockey.

Mikhail Yegorov, BU (So., G; St. Petersburg, Russia) Stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced to backstop the Terriers to a 2-1 win over No. 17 Cornell at Red Hot Hockey.

As expected, Eiserman, Bednarik and Cole Hutson were chosen for the U.S. Junior National Team preliminary roster. All three had participated in USA Hockey's World Junior Summer Showcase. The 2026 World Junior Championships begin December 26 in St. Paul and Minneapolis, with the championship game set for January 5.

Eiserman and Hutson helped Team USA win gold at last year's WJCs. Hutson's 11 points led all skaters in the tournament and set a record for points by a defenseman. Eiserman had a 3-4-7 line for the U.S.

NHL Network will air all Team USA games and others. A schedule is in the USA Hockey release linked below. 

Sascha Boumedienne, a standout for Sweden at last Spring's World U18s with 14 points in seven games, is expected to take a lead role on the Tre Kroner blue line at the WJCs.

In the USA Hockey Division 1 Poll, BU jumps up two slots to 318. No Hockey East teams are among the poll's top 10, but there are six in the next eight spots. 

Terriers also move up to #18 in the USCHO Division 1 Poll, just behind the team they defeated in Red Hot Hockey, Cornell.

Post-game, Eiserman told the media, “I love these big games. Love the big lights.” Fifty percent of his goals away from Agganis have been scored at NHL arenas.

►Saturday's attendance at Madison Square Garden was 17,478, the largest crowd for Red Hot Hockey since 2013. While, as been the case at previous RHH games, Cornell fans outnumbered the BU fans, there was no doubt which was the superior pep band. After the final buzzer, Terrier fans joined the BU Band for a chorus of "Hey Baby."

►BU Hockey Stats' Week 9 recap, "Miracle on 34's Stick," which also includes advanced analytics, notes that BU has killed 10 of the 11 power plays including four on Saturday. He adds that, "Despite having less OZone Possession time, the Terriers held a slight edge in EV Possession, 52% to 48%. They also held a slight edge in Puck Battles, 51% to 49%."

    

►Jay Pandolfo now has a 4-1 record against Cornell as a head coach—all one-goal games. Along with Saturday’s win, that includes a 4-3 come-from-behind win at Agganis Arena on late goals by Dom Fensore (video)  and Lane Hutson (video) in January 2023, a 2-1 NCAA Regional win also in 2023, and a 3-2 victory at last season’s Toledo Regional final on a Quinn Hutson overtime goal (video). The only loss was by a 2-1 score in 2023’s Red Hot Hockey.  

As a player, Pandolfo was 2-0 against the Big Red, scoring once in a 1993 4-3 win in Ithaca, and scoring twice in a 7-1 romp at Walter Brown two years later. 

 

 

►The last two Red Hot Hockey games underscore that more shots doesn't always assure a win. In Saturday's 2-1 win BU was outshot, 29-17. Two years ago at RHH #9, the Big Red won 2-1, despite being outshot 36-19 by the Terriers.

A year ago, it was the Belpot Trophy; this season the Kelley-Harkness Trophy. 

 

►Former Terrier Doug Grimes, now at Miami, became the first player to win back-to-back Belpots as the Red Hawks were victorious in Belfast.     

►BU Hockey's partnership with Hockey in Harlem began in 2013 with a clinic at the Central Park rink. This season's pre-Red Hot Hockey skate was held at Chelsea Piers.

Looking ahead 

►After a pre-season injury kept 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence out of 18 of Muskegon's first 19 games, the 5-⭐️center has quickly put his game into high gear. The Lumberjacks' captain has a 6-3-9 line in five games with 25 shots taken. The seven points he produced in three games this past week earned USHL Forward of the Week honors.

►NHL.com's Mike Morreale's draft notebook digs into 2026 recruit Caleb Malhotra who currently has the second most points (10-19-29 in 23 games) among OHL rookies. The son of longtime NHL center Manny Malhotra also is a 5-⭐️prospect.

"He's a complete player who plays both ways on the puck," former NHL defenseman [and Brantford coach Jay McKee] said. "It's really impressive what he's done coming in as a first-year player, in his draft year. He kind of found some chemistry right away with the line that I put him on in training camp and we kind of stuck with that for majority of the season. He has the ability to score but he's the kind of guy that makes the players around him better, so I have no doubt that anyone he plays with, it's going to be a strong line."

►2026 recruit Haoxi Wang scored his second goal in Oshawa's 2-1 loss to Ottawa. With ten points, he's leads the Generals' defensemen in scoring.    

►Future Terrier netminder Andrei Nickoleav is on a roll.

Looking back

►The Hockey News reports that Blackhawks rookie Ryan Greene has seen his ice time and his role grow with more special teams opportunities. 

For the last handful of games, Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Greene has been elevated to the top line. He has been skating as the left wing alongside Connor Bedard. The right wing has been shuffled due to injuries through the stretch, but it’s usually either Tyler Bertuzzi or Andre Burakovsky.

Greene’s style of play makes him a great “third wheel” of a line. Connor Bedard is always going to drive the play when he’s on the ice, but Greene is a guy who can win 50/50 battles, be sound positionally, and get himself into spaces where he can score goals

►With three assists in the Sharks' 6-3 win over the Mammoth, Macklin Celebrini is second in the NHL points race.

►Drew Commesso stopped 25 of 27 shots in Rockford's 3-2 win against Milwaukee. He lowered his GAA to 2.74 and his save percentage to .910
