Dynamic NTDP U17 forward commits to BU; 77-78 Terriers named a Top 5 college hockey team

   

BU has received its third commitment in the current recruiting cycle, getting a verbal from NTDP U17 left-shot forward Deverin Warner, a 5-⭐️ recruit (per PuckPreps). The 5’10” 181 lb., New Jersey native has a long resume of point-producing and earned a spot on the U17s with a strong performance at last Spring’s NTDP evaluation camp. College Puck NXT was first with this news.

Scouting reports highlight his high-end puck-handling ability and creativity, strong hands and skating. 

Warner joins recent commits Quinn Norman and Kaden Aucoin, both 2010 defensmen, in the 2028 recruit class, which also includes goalie Andrei Nikolaev.

The 16-year-old Warner racked up 82 points (37G,45A) to lead the Woodbridge Wolfpack 15U AAA to the 15-O US Nationals. Last December, he powered the Wolfpack (4-5-9 in five games) to a title in the USHL American Cup 15U youth division, prompting Elite Prospects to report:

"Deverin Warner showcased a high level of individual skill throughout the tournament. He attacked defenders off the rush with confidence, using quick hands and sharp changes of direction to create separation. His speed entering the zone forced defenders to retreat, allowing to generate offense through both puck possession and deception.  

"Beyond his puck skills, Warner displayed strong awareness and vision, using shot fakes and subtle delays to open passing lanes. Given space he consistently produced Grade-A chances for himself and his teammates, contributing meaningfully to Woodbridge’s championship run."

When he was selected for the NTDP for 2026-27, Elite Prospects noted that Warner “has been dynamic this season, taking over games by playing through contact and manipulating with his feet.”

Last summer, he skated in USA Hockey’s Select 15 camp, producing a 3-4-7 line in four games. At the World Selects Invitational, he generated six goals and four assists in nine games. In 2024-25, he had 51-51-102 scoring line for the Wolfpack’s 14U AAA. The previous year he posted 77-78-155 for the 13s.

In a May 2026 ranking of US-born 2010s, Elite Prospects had Warner at #37.

Deverin Warner impressed scouts all year long with his mature approach to the game. His Woodbridge group was stockpiled with talent, but perhaps none was more dynamic than Warner. In spots where other players were easily worked off pucks, Warner fought through contact, stayed on his feet, and earned possession in the toughest ice. There are beautiful movement patterns in his game, with tricky weight shifts and rotations to shake coverages. Warner likely projects as a middle-six dynamic winger with some contact skills. His pro projection will almost entirely depend on physical growth.

8. Mikhail Yegorov, G, 20 (New Jersey Devils)

It’s easy to look at Yegorov’s stat dip this past year and feel a bit concerned. But Boston University wasn’t good, and Yegorov was left to do a lot of heavy lifting more often than not. The 6-foot-5 goaltender is quite aggressive with his angles, but he also has lightning-quick reflexes and gives opponents little to work with. He never lets a bad goal bother him because he’s one of the most mentally strong goalies you’ll find. It feels like his movements are more refined than they were when he first made the jump to college, and his glove hand has only gotten better with time. Yegorov will spend another year at BU before potentially turning pro and chasing a job in Utica in 2027-28. I see a future NHL starter here.

Looking back

The Hockey News' Ryan Lambert posted his cut at The Best NCAA Hockey Teams Ever Assembled. His five-team list features four Eastern teams, which led to the expected angry pushback from Western school. Number three on Lambert's ranking is the 1977-78 Terriers whose 30-2-0 record culminated with a 5-3 win over BC in the NCAA championship game. (Video highlights)

That squad, which began the season with 21 consecutive win, featured future Olympic gold medalists Jim Craig, Jack O'Callahan and David Silk, along with John Bethel, Brian Durocher and top scorer Mark Fidler (30-35-65) who was the ECAC Rookie of the Year. 

The other teams selected: #1 Maine (1992-93); #2 Cornell (1969-70); #4 Michigan (1995-95) and #5 BC (2011-12).  That top-ranked Black Bears team (Paul Kariya, Jim Montgomery, the Ferraro twins) went 42-1-2 with the only loss coming at the hands of the Terriers, 7-6 in overtime in Orono on a Mike Prendergast goal.

In our friend BU Hockey Stats' graphic below, Macklin Celebrini's 115 points, Jack Eichel's 94 and Clayton Keller's 90 are all-time records for those franchises.

Luke Tuch, an assistant captain on BU's 2023 and 2024 Frozen Four teams, has been traded to Columbus by Montreal. He spent the past two seasons with the Canadians' AHL team in Laval.
