NHL honors for McAvoy, Zegras; MacArthur gets ECHL head coaching spot

 

Former BU All-American Charlie McAvoy was named to the NHL second all-star team and also finished fourth in the Norris Trophy balloting for top defenseman. He was joined in the top five by #1 Cale Makar (UMass) and #5 Adam Fox (Harvard). With a 10-45-56 scoring line, McAvoy set career highs for both goals and assists—also in plus-minus with +31.

In two seasons on the Terrier blue line, he totaled 51 points (8G,43A), earning Hockey East All-Rookie honors as a freshman and First-team Hockey East All-Star and NCAA honors and  as a sophomore. He also won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2017 World Junior Championships.

Trevor Zegras has been named to the NHL’s All-Rookie team for 2021-22. The Anaheim Ducks standout, who also finished second in voting for the league’s Calder Trophy as top rookie, was the top vote-getter among the league’s rookie forwards. With 23-38-61 in 75 games, he finished second among rookie scorers, while setting single-season franchise records for assists and points by a rookie.

In his one season at BU, 2019-20, Zegras had 36 points in 33 games and earned a spot on Hockey East’s All-Rookie team.

Former BU captain, All-American and Hobey Baker Award winner Chris Drury, now president and general manager of the N.Y. Rangers, is a finalist for the NHL’s Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.  In his first full year as the Rangers’ top executive, the Broadway Blueshirts reached the Eastern Conference finals.

A member of BU’s 1995 national champion and 1997 national finalist squads, he is the Terriers' career goal-scoring leader with 112 and is third in career points with 214. Drury spent 12 seasons in the NHL, winning the Calder Trophy as top rookie in 1998-99 and the Stanley Cup in 2000 with the Avalanche.

Looking back

Former Terrier captain and All-American center Pete MacArthur has been named head coach and director of hockey operations for the ECHL Adirondack Thunder. The Clifton Park, N.Y., native who had a 64-83-147 scoring line in four seasons at BU, concluded a long playing career this past season, serving as the captain of the Thunder for a third time. He also had stops in the AHL and in Europe.

In 2005-06, MacArthur scored a team-high 39 points to lead the Terriers to the Hockey East tournament championship. Two seasons later, he had a career-best 45 points, earning first-team Hockey East All-Star honors and second-team All-American recognition.
